At the current summit in Europe, Putin has stated his opposition to Bush &Co. proposition to make a ring of nuclear weapons in Europe. He states this violates previous agreements the US has with Russia and that if it is done, he will have no other recourse but to respond the same way Kennedy did during the Cuban Missile Crisis. So, same thing? If not, why? If it is, isn't it just one more way that Bush is pushing US colonialism on the rest of the world?

dirtbag, you state that Putin doesn't speak for the Russian people, well, Bush doesn't speak for the American people, either, with a 23% approval rating, but both nimnuts have the little red button at their fingertips.

I was going to say that Kennedy did not have critics and political enemies assasinated, but given what we now know, conclusively, about the CIA's activities and strategic relationships throughout the globe, the similarities between Putin and JFK are interesting.

JFK rallied the people against a real and percieved threat and competitor.

Political leaders of other countries were targeted by US covert operations during the Kennedy and subsequent administrations.

Organized criminal syndicates were targeted by the Kennedy administration.

Kennedy was abnormally intelligent.

However, freedom of the press was not curtailed during the Kennedy administration.

The Kennedy administration lasted less than 3 years.

The Kennedy administration did not effectively eliminate the democratic process.

The Kennedy administration did not stage terrorist attacks in order to consolidate power and eliminate the processes of a democratic republic.

Kennedy's every decision was not hinged to the consolidation of political and economic power to himself and his cronies.

In conclusion, I would say that Putin is the Russian version of Bush, not Kennedy. Although he his far more intelligent than his American counterpart.

Well even though I'm embarrassed to say it, there is a parallel. The US wants to put missiles very close to Russian territory, just as the USSR once put missile close to the US in Cuba. There are differences, of course. The US is not doing this in a sneaky way as the USSR did in 1962, the US claims it will not have offensive missiles in the former Eastern bloc countries, and there is no "cold war"...yet..

Interesting question. This may create a new arms race between the US & Russia with possibly China getting in on the action.

However, I would see it less as Putin becoming the next JFK and more of Bush II becoming the next Nikita Khrushchev.

My, how the tables have turned.

Your details are wrong. The Bush plan is to create a defense circle of of non-nuclear interceptor missiles to protect against incoming nuclear missiles. Putin said if it is done he will place short range nuclear missiles at the border - he claims the defense missiles violate a short range missile treaty.

A more accurate statement would be that Vlad Putin will be the next Stalin.

no. not really the same. but it is striking that shrub wants to put missile facilities in poland at just about the same distance from russia that the cuban missile site was from florida. any decent investigator knows, there are no "coincidences."

If anything, Putin is probably the next Stalin or someone from that ilk. Otherwise he wouldn't be looking for ways to remain in power since he can't run for president again.
