Cats don't tend be protective of anything except themselves and their food bowl. And that's the classic arched back, hair on end, hissing growling and attacking if they need to.

Males cats are not protective towards females. in fact they are exactly like the Lion family, they will kill the female kittens, so the female can come back into season so he can sire is own cubs. Once a male or tom cat as mated, he dont care what happens, he move on to another female.
I got 3 cats, yes they all boys and they dont give monkeys uncle about each other, if 1 is retching and beign sick, they look, then just walk away. Rare you get a cat protective over a cat. But i have seen a Tom extremly protective over his buddy which was a dog. That was amazing.

In general NO, most cats aren't very protective, but that isn't to say there aren't a few oddballs in the bunch!! I have two cats, a brother and sister, and they are inseperable. I've raised them since they were four weeks old and they are never far apart; always within eye-sight of each other. They sleep with each other always. I've never seen a cat more protective over his little sister than this cat! My friend brings her dog over all the time to my house, and even though they get along with each other perfectly, he is always a bit "standoffish" about him sniffing her and will jump right in between the two of them and do the sniffing himself :) It's very adorable.

Not as a rule. But sometimes a large strong cat will protect a smaller one. For instance, my mother used to have a BIG grey cat who would protect all the household kittens and train them- Including the two-legged ones. It was rather funny watching him teach my nephew how to crawl, then walk!

Yes. Male cats are very territorial. Much like wild cats they will guard 'their' yard, their people, and especially will become aggressive around female cats. They will give a warning sound that sounds like a very deep throaty meow. They will get down low in posture, hair raised, as the crouch down and watch another male cat. They try to intimidate the other male cat to make them go away. This can very quickly become a fight to the death.
This is why it is important to keep your male cat inside the house, to get them neutered, and to control stray cats in your neighborhood.
If you notice stray cats hanging around in your neighborhood, call animal control. Stray cats can carry diseases that your cat could catch from socializing with them or from fighting with them. Fleas and mites are probably the most common... but there are also diseases such as distemper, feline AIDS, rabies, and other nasty diseases.
Make sure your pet has all their vaccinations and are spayed or neutered.

Cats aren't very protective. Their more protective about themselfs than anything else. Their very independent animals. Which is sometimes a good thing.

Only when the female is in heat. They will become agressive. Hissing arching the back, and chasing.
