Dori's version is pretty good except that I think you need something like autrefois at the beginning to convey "At one time I used to think....but now....
But Mike's "J'ai utilise pour penser " for "I used to think" is dreadful. "I used to think" means that previously I thought. "J'ai utilise pour penser" is meaningless as it has no object but if it means anything it means "I have used for thinking".

Je pensais que les règlements scolaires étaient stupides et inutiles, mais maintenant je me rends compte qu'ils sont indispensables pour établir(or maintenir) le respect mutuel(or réciproque)au sein de l'école.
