I should hope it isn't panic time. Also the patient doesn't necessarily have to be in cardiac arrest, I've seen codes called for bradycardia (slow heartbeat), respiratory distress, severe trauma, and cardiac arrest.
Basically a code blue is defined as cardiac or pulmonary arrest, but you don't necessarily wait until that happens to call one.
And in case you were interested:
Code Red- Fire
Code Pink- baby abduction
Code Gray- Severe Weather Watch
Code Black- Severe Weather Warning
Code Brown- bomb threat
Code Green- elderly patient elopement (wandering dementia patient)

It somewhat depends on the hospital, as some have their own codes. "Dr Strong" may mean a security situation (patient violent). Usually, though, Code Red is fire and Code Blue is medical emergency.

Usually a cardiac arrest or a myocardial infarction.
By the way, a code black is a bomb threat in every hospital I have been to/worked at.

WOW, "The nurses don't know how to read"!? What a great excuse...and what a great answer from a DOCTOR! What happened to your husband is a big deal, you not being notified is a big deal, the nurses not knowing how to read is a big deal, and the pain doctor giving you a dumb answer is a big deal! I wouldn't trust my husband at this hospital. You definitely shouldn't have to cover the expenses because of their mistake. Focus on your husband right now & deal with these morons later!!!
