My family was thinking about maybe getting another dog. We will get it at the humane society, but the humane society by our house is very large and has a huge amount of dogs, all different breeds,

So I wanted to know what mediumish-sized(20-65 IBS.) are good with kids and cats/other pets. Thanks

Of course they will be mutts, but usually I, or at least someone who works there will know the general breed(s). For example: collie/lab mix. pitbull/poodle mix.

To be honest a lot of those dogs in the shelter are going to be mixes or mutts. It is hard to say what breed you should get because even though each breed has their standards you don't know what psychological problems they have endured since they ended up in a shelter. Some were puppy milled, some were abondoned, some were surrendered and so on. None of these experiences are pleasant and some dogs get depressed. It is really hard to know the dog's true personality in a shelter. I know the dog we rescued is a completely different dog now then he was when we first met him.

I'd say do a walk through of the shelter and see if any catch your own. We all have instincts and intuition and what is to say you can't use that to find the right dog for you (I did...) Then if you find out bring your kids to meet it and ask questions from the people who take care of him/her. Do research on the breed if there is predominant one and see if it all fits together.

Good luck with your task ahead.

That is a tough question. Too many variables to your questions. You need to do a lot of reading about all the different dog breeds. And what would be the purpose of the dog.
Here is my favorite: The Groenendael also know as the Belgian Malinois and the Belgian Tevuren. Very good breed with children, very good guard dog and all around best friend.
Lastly, let the dog pick you. Not you pick the dog.

First of all it is awesome your going through a shelter!!! :o) Yay for that. See if the shelter will let you take the dog and foster it for a few days to a week to see how it interacts with your other dog and rest of the family. I have two black lab mixes that I rescued and are both 40-48 lbs and are wonderful...one is sitting on my lap now since he thinks he is a lap dog! ha. Other good breeds are: beagles, Boston terriers, bulldogs, cocker spaniels, dachshunds, havanese, corgis, and so many more including just a happy go lucky mutt! Just google it and do your research :o)

I have a lab/boxer mix who has a great temperament. She is only about 40 pounds and is great around the kids. We oftentimes joke that she may have been a person in a previous life because of the looks she gives people. There are various websites that help give you an idea about breeds that are good wit kids and such.

I love the Australian Shepards because they are so gentle and so good with kids of any age. I have owned 2 and they were around little and big kids and we never had a problem with them. The lab is also a great dog to have around children.

I would not go for a thoroughbred but a cross bred or Heinz 57 you will spend less time with the vet. each dog will have problems and you will not know it's history. I suggest you let the dog pick you, they are better judges of character than you are

Corgis, beagles, cockers, lab mixes, go and tell the workers what your needs are and they will show you a couple of dogs to look at that should meet your needs. I am very glad that you are saving a life!!

TRY A LAB OR A RETRIEVER, THEY ARE SUCH GOOD FAMILY DOGS, AND ARE GREAT WITH KIDS.

DONT GET DALMATIONS, GROWN BULL BREEDS, THEY BOTH HAVE A LOW TOLERANCE FOR KIDS, ESSPECIALLY IF THEY ARE OF MATURITY, AND WERENT RAISED AROUND THEM. THERE ARE SOME MORE BUT I CANT THINK OF THEM RIGHT OFF.

Jack Russell dogs are the ones that have considerable humor and intelligence. They are such happy little characters and playful as the day is long. I have one and she is my very best friend. I highly recommend one.
