We have AT & T for long distance calling but rarely use it as it's free with our cell phones. We did not know if there is a legal requirement for land lines to maintain a long distance provider as well. Any idea?

The phone company cannot force you to keep a long distance carrier on your line. However, without one, you cannot make a long distance call unless you use a dial-around access code (i.e. 10x10x321) or dial 0 to get the operator and have them complete the call for you.

With that in mind, it is a good idea to have one, just in case. What if you lose you cell, or you do not get good reception in your house? The trick is to have a LD company that does not carry a monthly charge. That way, you only pay for a call if one is made. The larger phone companies usually do not have a LD plan without a monthly charge, so I would check with the lesser known companies.

I have free long distance on cell phone also.

I keep LD on land line in the event the cell battery dies, or the towers go down.

Remember World Trade Center & Hurricane Katrina. Also, where I live, it is not unusual for power to go out from time to time. I keep a Princess Phone in the closet to plug in in place of my cordless.

I always have local and long distance capability.

You don't need long distance on your home phone. Some people don't even have a land-line anymore.

I eventually dropped AT&T and now use only my cell phone too, since I make a lot of calls to other Verizon Wireless callers and never go through all of my minutes with non-Verizon numbers.

We have Verizon land line. I cancelled long distance and only have local calling. I have free long distance on my cell phone. Why pay for long distance carrier when you get it free on the cell phone.

Nope you dont need to have long distance on your landline. I would only have long distance if you make lots of LD calls during the day. But since you dont, the cell phone works out better.

No, you don't need long distance on your land line; you can get local only. But why? I use my cell phone, exclusively, and have cable for internet. No land line at all.

You don't have to have long distance on your land line. Usually the company you have will have a flat rate if you happen to use the service. I think the only service they have to have legally is 911 access.

I am a chatter and a lot of my friends live long distance. I have one of those all inclusive plans. I only need it b/c I talk a lot. Otherwise, why pay for what you are not using?

Absolutely no reason to keep long distance service on your home phone.
