My dogs got fleas, I treated them with advantage (a groomer recommended this I always used frontline before but she said her costumers were complaining about it), but they still got into the house. I thought if I waited it out they'd go away. A couple of days later I bought the Hartz 3 in 1 spray, & sprayed the couch & curtains (my house is all hardwood flours). Well that didnt work so I bought a bomb (same brand) & after that still saw a few so I sprayed down everything & washed all stuffed animals & bed clothes. I check my dogs & the fleas were back! I retreated them & they still are on them! (Its only been a little over 2 weeks since the 1st treatment & a few days since the 2nd!) I don't care what I have to spend I want to get rid of them! I have a one year old daughter & they are biting her terribly! any recommendations? Keep in mind the baby though, it has to be safe for her.

First let me tell you that I own a pest control company and what I will recommend is the complete treatment that should help you completely get rid of the fleas.

First, treat the pet with Capstar. This is a pill that you get from the vet that will kill all of the fleas that get on the animal for the first 24 hours. Second, use either Frontline or Advantage, these can also be purchased from the vet. Frontline can be used on pets 12 weeks old or older. Advantage can be used on animals as young as 6 weeks. If the pet is old enough for either product, switch back and forth between the two. One month use one, the next use the other. The reason I recommend this is that there are two main types of fleas that infest pets. One product works better on the first type and the other product works better on the second type. By using both, you make sure you have covered all your bases.

Once the pet has been treated, you must treat your home and yard. The best products to do this would include not only a killing agent, but also a sterilization agent. Inside, I would use Ultracide, if you can get it. (Many on line sites sell it.) Follow the instructions on the label Wash all animal’s bedding and vacuum frequently. I WOULD NOT put any chemical in the vacuum bag or catch container, other than a flea collar. It is too dangerous to risk the vacuum accidentally spreading that chemical through the air. Throw out the vacuum bag or dump the catch container after every vacuuming. You can never vacuum too much DO NOT STEAM CLEAN YOUR RUGS This can hatch flea eggs and make your problem worse.

Outside I would use Demon WP mixed with Gentrol or Nylar, carefully following label instructions. Treat the entire yard, paying special attention to under bushes and low hanging branches. Most of these products can be bought at any Do-It-Yourself Pest Control company either on line or in a store.

Treating your house and yard is just as important as treating the pet

It is also very important to stay away from the grocery store or box store products like Zodiac or Hartz. Many of these products can cause severe allergic reactions in animals.

You've just discovered what I try every day to tell people on here - flea bombs don't work. Nothing from a pet store does - the reason for this is that pet stores simply aren't licensed to sell the drugs that appropriate, and safe, for flea treatment - so anything you buy from their is going to be pretty much useless, whether it's an animal or a house treatment. Don't take any notice of what groomers say on the subject - groomers groom dogs, they don't tend to be medical professionals!

Stick with Frontline, or any other veterinary spot-on if you want. Just get it on your dog's skin, not fur, and they'll be covered.

Now for house treatment - you need a spray for the house from your vets. Indorex, Staykil, Acclaim and Skoosh are all good. You may have to spray your house twice, 10 days apart, to get any newly hatched eggs

It's so easy to get rid of fleas from your pet with Frontline but with the house, it's much harder! I had tried all sorts and used a flea bomb as a last resort. It worked (thankfully) but I took my cat to my mother's as a precaution. I used the Bob Martin one and was surprised that it worked because the stuff you get from them for your pet usually doesn't. You can also buy sprays that are supposed to give your carpets and furnishing 6 months protection from fleas (I think they kill the eggs or something). Maybe you should buy one of those and use it after you've used the flea bomb. Just make sure kitty is safely out of the way!

Best thing to do is take your dog to a groomer, have them treated for fleas, while there go home and set off several bombs in the house. Then do the same process 14 days later. This should take care of the problem. Also! Don't forget to treat the yard, too! Get Diazanon granules and sprinkle in the yard.

Advantage is the only product I found that actually worked. You have to give it some time, as new fleas hatch, and they have to jump on your pet to die. When I first started using Advantage is started killing the fleas on my dogs and cat within a half hour. Then the next month I treated all pets, and havent had a flea problem since. I keep a supply of Advantage in case anyone gets fleas again.

WOW stop with the chemicals!!! You are poisoning the dog your kids and yourself!! I know you only want the best. Get some diatomatious earth. You can usually find it from any farm supply store or order it online. Sprinkle some on the dog's fur then all over the house. Next give the dog a bath with a moisturizing dog shampoo and vacuum the house. Also sprinkle it on the yard. This is a very safe and natural insect killer. It is petrified single celled organisms that dry out the insects like salt on a slug. Easy and safe for everyone.

Forget about DIY Bombs...They rarely work, as you've already learned.

Call in a professional exterminator to have your house and yard treated. Initially, they'll come every 2 weeks (A flea's "Cycle" is 14 days) and then monthly or quarterly depending on what they use.
