I have a Whirlpool (Ceran) glass stove top, and would like to try making a pancake, or frying an egg directly on the glass top. I'd use a teflon/plastic spatula, low heat, and butter or oil or even Pam so it wouldn't stick. Can't find anyone who says it's possible and/or safe. Anybody try this? Thanks.

First I think you would want to keep it clean being they are expensive. I have spilled some stuff on the glass before and it made a real mess and stains on the glass. I would not try it, the heat might be to hot.

I have not tried it because I don't have a Ceran stove top.

When I was a short order cook, the usual practice was to make eggs and pancakes directly onto the flat top griddle, but that was specifically designed as a cook surface. Until you get to be a "pro" and are fast the pancake batter or egg mixture will run all over the flat surface and go where you don't want it to go.

Also, low heat isn't the right temperature to cook pancakes: they like a hot griddle; same with many egg dishes.

Long way to say: NO, I wouldn't try it. The reasons given by the other people are correct, too.

USE A PAN, honey! It's easier to clean than an entire stove top!!

You can cook with glass on an electric stove ONLY if the glass was made for that purpose. I have a very old glass double boiler which I use on the stove top a lot but it was made for that purpose. Visions, is a line of cook ware which is made for the stove top. You CANNOT take a regular glass pie plate or casserole and use it on the stove top.

Yes, I put my expensive steaks directly on the glass for a great sear and then finish them off in the oven. Mess is avoidable if you clean directly after the surface cools.

NO. It's not a cooking surface, but a heating surface for pots/pans. The temps are far too high to cook food directly. Do it at your own risk.

Being as those stove tops are very expensive to replace I wouldn't recommend it. Are you just too lazy to wash a pan or what? Odd, very odd.
You'll also have issues with the heat.

The manual for my glass top says not to, but it doesn't say why not. I wouldn't want to have to clean it if the stuff sticks.
