I know an M1 Garand takes a clip and my Mom used to put them in her hair, but what's that thing called that holds the bullets in say, an m1911 as manufactured in 1912? I only ask the question to get enough points to actually give someone a correct answer.

Your mom put Garand En-Bloc clips in her hair? I want to meet her...

A Clip holds rounds together. The Garand En-Bloc clip is the only type I know of that feeds the weapon directly.
Stripper Clips are used for loading magazines, whether removable, box-type magazines (as in the m1911 you mentioned) or internal magazines (as in the 98 Mauser rifles).

Magazines hold and feed rounds to the action, as in 1911 and M9 Pistols, AR-15 and AK-47 Rifles - and nearly every semi-automatic firearm you can think of.
