In religion we define two things: The ideal and the idol.
The ideal is pretty common for most belief system; do not lie, do not kill, respect others, etc. The moral code is very similar from different faiths, and is also reflected on systems separate from faith (governments for example).
The idol is the part that divides people. The idol would be the dogmatic part of every believe system. For example, the idea that Mohamed is Allah's prophet, or the virgin Mary, etc. The idol is that part that you have to accept without question about your believe system.
That is why religion divides people: for more people is easier believe instead of thinking on your own. Sometimes when life gets rough, people prefer to believe instead of facing things, and this is where religion turns bad and becomes "the opium of mankind" (paraphrasing Marx).

There are some fundamental teachings that are the same.

I was Christian. However, I came to embrace Islam because it was so different and unique in comparison to Christianity. The differences are what drew me to Islam, not its similarities to Christianity.

We have the freedom of religion. That is what important, respect is only what we need from one another. Believing on what religion you have is essential to one's being. They have been grown up as to what they want to believe in. Fine, all we need is Peace on Earth.

Thanks for asking. Have a great day!
