Jesus Christ was the fulfillment of prophecy; He was the ONE prophecied to come. Rev 19:10, "...for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy".
"Among those that are born of women", is speaking of the fleshly carnal man. He was filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother's womb. Eilijah means, God of Jehovah; #452 in Strong's Hebrew Dictionary & the Greek meaning refers us back to the Hebrew meaning. John the Baptist came in the power & Spirit of God the Father; in the same power & Spirit that Elijah came. This is why they thought Jesus was calling for Elias while he was dying.

John the Baptist was above the other prophets because he pronounced the coming of the Lord. He was the shadow of what was to come. He not only pronounced "Make you the way of the Lord" but he declared "Behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world," and this announced God into the world in flesh. None of the other prophets had such great an honor.
The law was still in affect and what was coming after John was grace and the 12 disciples and they were taught by the Lord and led of the Spirit and if you are led of the Spirit you are not under the law.
I believe this is Calvin's commentary and I could probably have done it more justice. Please give us your version, because I would love to hear it.
One thing for sure the Temple folks were not taking serious the things concerning their soul. They didn't listen to John and they didn't listen to Jesus. This is often what happens today when we try to explain the Word of God to unbelievers. They are too carnal to worry about things concerning their soul.

Of all people, no one fullfilled his God-given purpose better than John. Yet, in God's kingdom, all who come after John have a greater spiritual heritage because they have clearer knowledge of the purpose of Jesus' death and resurrection.John was the last to function like the Old Testament prophets, the last to prepare the peoople for the coming messianic age, Jesus was not contrasting the man John with individual Christians: he was contrasting life before Christ with life in the fullness of Christs kingdom.

Yeah, it's funny how the bible is supposed to be literal according to some, just stories to others.
It seems so.....open to interpretation.
And the whole carnal thing being death? That didn't come into christianity until St Augustine in the 8th century or so. That wasn't Jesus's idea, that was man.

Jesus never called John greater. Your "hidden manna" heresy is just that, heresy. The Word is of no private interpretation.

You are taking it out of context.
28 "For I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he."

Christ was not a prophet...He did not claim to be one-He called Himself God's 'only begotten Son', 'the Son of Man', and 'the bread of life'

John prophesized the coming of Jesus.
That is why I think Jesus said what He did.
