The way to correct Shin splints is to strengthen the muscles at the front of the legs. Lie face down in bed with your toes hanging over the edge. Pull your toes upward against the resistance of the mattress. Try to work up to 3 or 4 sets of 5 – 10 reps each.

You need to examine the condition and type of shoes you wear. If it's the old basketball shoes, then you need to think about getting into good running shoes.

Good Luck

Shin splints are an irritation of the muscles on the front of your lower leg. Usually thought to be the tibialis anterior, when you flex your foot you use this muscle, and a few others.

The muscles are in bundles and covered with a sheath.
The muscles get inflamed and swell which causes more pain as they continue to move up and down, while you run or walk.

You can stretch and massage, use ice and sometimes an over the counter anti inflammatory like Motrin will help.
Use good shoes, run on soft surfaces, not pavement and relax.
It will go away as you condition yourself to running. Part of getting into shape is strengthening the connective tissue so you do not get injured.

I had shin splints when I started running. I went to a shoe store that specializes in running shoes. They watched my running form and recommended a different shoe for me. I haven't had shin splints since then.
