Swelling is normally worst on days 2 & 3. Should start going down starting day 4. Ice only helps first day. After the first 24 hours you should use warm packs. Ibuprofin will help with some of the inflamation, but really only time is going to get rid of the swelling.
If the swelling or pain get worse, you need to call the office and be seen for possible infection or dry socket.
They should have given you some after surgery care instructions. Make sure you read them and follow them.

I have also just had dental surgery, 3 days ago now. My top lip swelled up after the first day and was still swollen yesterday. Today it hasn't got worse, but seems to be calming down a bit. I was told at the hospital that it was likely to get worse for the next 2 or 3 days after the surgery and then get better so don't worry it is perfectly normal. As for bringing the swelling down, I think just leave it and try to eat a healthy diet as I'm told this will speed up the whole healing process.

Try to rest. This is most important. The more active you are the more this will raise your blood pressure and the likelihood you will experience swelling.
Use a cold cloth, or wrap a bag of frozen peas, and hold onto the area.
If you get increasing pain or a bad taste you may have a 'dry socket' - where the blood clot is lost and the bone is exposed. This can be caused by too vigorous rinsing (retention of the blood clot is important for healing)
A dry socket can be very painful and usually needs dressing by the dentist.
Extraction of 3rd molars (wisdom teeth) is bound to be fairly uncomfortable and some pain is to be expected. Catch up on some reading or DVDs!

I think id pay the dentist or docs a visit swelling occurs where repair is needed so the dentist who pulled must of caused a bit of damage I know people that have had all their teeth pulled and not had swelling, maybe you need a different antibiotic for the infection and are you rinsing with salt water?

If it's day 3 and the swelling is worse, call the dentist... it should have gone down by now. Being uncomfortable is normal, increased swelling is not.
Best of luck to you!

Ice pack for 20 minutes at a time. Rinse with warm salt water every 30 minutes - it toughens the gum tissue, which promotes healing.
Call your dentist and tell him/her what's going on.
