I agree.
However, the problem exist that if it's on public property these scumbags have a right to be on the property as well. They don't have the right to stand with the people grieving, but they can easily stand 100 feet away when spew whatever beliefs they have.
I really don't want to say what I think of anyone protesting at a soldiers funeral or any ones funeral. I also have my opinions of what should be done to these people. I guarantee they would be highly upset if people showed up at one of their funerals and spewed hate and celebrate victory.
Luckily, there are certain groups that provide security when this happens, but I'm sure it's still traumatic to the grieving.
Just keep in mind that these people who protest and celebrate death in this way will not be sitting at the right hand of the Father when their day comes, but at the right hand of Satan.
Again, just my opinion.

well, i am most certain "fighting words" could be seen as being presented by rejoicing in the death of a soldier, especially in the case of family members at a private funeral. If you go by the first amendment and how it has been used in the past, in the case Petitioner V Todd Michell, i am nearly certain that there would be some kind of protection for this event, due to the discrimination of the person and their right of association.

I do not know what is legal/constitutional or not but I know how I would react to these people.
A little while ago these pieces of crap were coming to a funeral in a town that I did a lot of work in. The sheriff was a shooting buddy of mine and suggested I not be in town during the funeral. I took his advice and decided to do business in El Paso that day, about 700 miles away.
I am afraid if I would have gone there I might have accidentally run them down with my SUV. The when I got out my gun would have gone off when I was cleaning it and gotten the rest.
Legal; probably not; could you have found a Texas Panhandle jury to convict me; I seriously doubt it.
Still probably best that I took the Sheriffs advice

Unfortunately, those UGs from the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas are expressing their rights to free speech and if the city gives them a permit, they can do it. BUT...I saw a film clip when they went to a military funeral in Seaford, De. Some townspeople attacked them, stoned their van and ran them outta town! It happened in May of '06 Here's the link to the film clip:

I ride with a group who stands for those who have stood for us in opposition to those inbreds from WBC. How do they do it? About 80% of Fred Phelps' church is family and he has at least 5 lawyers. They push and push until someone reacts then they sue. That's what they told the city of Seaford, De...let us demonstrate or we'll sue you. Well, you can see how the CITIZENS of Seaford felt (I grew up just a few miles to the north).
Many states have passed laws because of the WBC concerning demonstrations at veterans' cemeteries. Even the federal gov't has passed a law concerning funerals at Arlington National Cemetery.

When human decency is no longer in fashion and the United States accepts it's all about "me" these kind of despicable things happen. This church is not Christian. There is nothing Christian about hate and meanness.

Protests must not be held on private activities particularly a funeral since the dead must be respected.

It's a shame that Phelps and his followers can't try to demonstrate the Christian attitudes that they say they have.
Hate has no place in Christianity.
