There are many ways to learn meditation...the important things are learning to breathe properly, relaxation, visualizaton and focusing on what you have chosen to mediate on. Some people become one with a tree, or they picture a fountain of light, or other scenarios. Find a quiet place, light a candle, maybe some incense...put on some soft music or nature sounds, and get comfortable but not so comfy you will fall asleep. I find a scented bubblebath works for me sometimes.

Meditation is not so difficult to start. The focus is away from the mind and into the body, and its connection with the universe. Deep breathing, where you loose yourself by focusing on breathing in and out, and in and out, may be enough to put you into a meditative state. The extra breathing that occurs, as a result of focussing, will cause changes in the body. Some people use imaging to focus the mind to help it work, or to channel its purpose. If you want to force the issue a little, and create the extra breathing required more readily, you can tense and relax your stomach, by ever so slightly tightening the leg's lifting muscles, to create the tension. You would tense your stomach while breathing in and relax it while breathing out. After doing this a while, you may be able to relax to the point you can continue the rest of the meditation with the focus only on the breathing, Another thing you can do is lift your feet up and down in rhythm with ones breathing.
Meditation can be done many ways. I do it with walking and running. Don't be affraid to be creative or to try any suggestions, any one else has, and find what works best for you. You don't have to meditate while sitting, you can lie down if that works for you.

Meditation is awareness, paying attention to things you have habitually ignored in the past. You may do so sitting down and relaxing or walking or running. The best meditation is that in which you manage to break out of set patterns of thinking. We, as humans, tend to get into ruts. This is useful for day to day needs. However, it tends to stifle creativity. And creativity cannot be taught because teaching is rut oriented. Therefore meditation consists of withdrawing from our traditional and habitual thought patterns and seeking out new territory for our thoughts.

To start with -
1. Witness your natural inhalation and exhalation. Alternatively, witness the flip between inhalation and exhalation.
2. Alternatively, let the thoughts flow and let the Self be a witness with choice less awareness, as if you are standing on a crossing and witnessing (not moving along with the traffic) the movement of thought traffic. Don’t suppress or fight or categorized thoughts as good and bad. Accept all noises and bodily distractions around you. Let it be, and be a witness!
3. Mind is linear and the thoughts manifest one-after-an-other. Thoughts emerge, rise and fall on the substratum of permanent awareness, which is different from thoughts. Observe and widen the gap between two thoughts.
4. Always remember "Thusness", "Suchness" or "This is so" or "Yathabhutam"!
When mastered, absorption (Samadhi) is natural state of mind with no mind, without any duality, where object of experience, experience and who is experiencing becomes one. This absorption is different from sleep, deep sleep, self-hypnotism, hypnotism, relaxation, concentration, meditation, hallucination and comma etc.
In advance stages, absorption happens 24 hours a day. What happens in absorption cannot be explained, because it is an experience beyond five senses. It is like explaining a color to a person, who is blind from birth.
But we get a flash of absorption when we observe a child who is totally engrossed with his toys and looses the concept of time, space and unit. Absorption (Samadhi) is sleepless sleep!

If you find it difficult to quiet your mind like I do, try a trick I learned: go somewhere natural like a park or meadow or stream or your backyard. Just sit and listen to the wind or the water. Don't try to force your mind to do anything, just sit and listen. Or get yourself a fish tank and just sit and watch the fish - they can be hypnotizing. Good luck! :)

There's a podcast on iTunes called "the Meditation Podcast."
If you have iTunes, download it, put the headphones on, breath and relax.
