I have heard that mould in condiments is very bad for you, and that if it appears on the surface it will already be throughout the whole jar. Is this the same kind of mould as appears on bread?

It can be. You've possibly heard that bread mold is the basis for penicillin. If you're allergic to penicillin, then it's very bad for you. If not, it'd be unlikely to hurt you.

Personally the taste of even a speck of mold makes me gag.

I throw bread out if I find even the tiniest bloom of mold on even a single slice.

I'm sure that spores and such have already been released by that point, and probably the whole loaf is "infected".

Be that as it may, I also know I've eaten a piece of bread, grabbed a second piece and THEN found the mold. I didn't die of it. Didn't even get sick.

But eew.

It's a different mould, and, while it won't kill you, I wouldn't eat it!
