Every once in a while, I get a sharp pain on the side of my chest. And it hurts when I breathe in. It only lasts a few seconds though.

I HAVE OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER
is this just an anxiety attack?

I know exactly what you're talking about. This happens to me too. It could be the anxiety, or believe it or not, it could be a gas pocket. I know several others that this happens to too, so don't worry about it too much.

Read about these:

1. Costochondritis. The cartilage in this area http://services.epnet.com/GetImage.aspx/getImage.aspx?ImageIID=6141 becomes inflamed and it stabs when you breathe. Read more at http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/costochondritis/DS00626

2. Pleurisy (some people just call this "gas"). The lining of the lungs is irritated or inflamed and it stabs when you breathe. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/pleurisy/DS00244

3. Less likely? Hiatal hernia. Gastroesophageal reflux disease. Upper respiratory infection. "Pulled muscle". "Pinched nerve."

It's doubtful that this pain is an anxiety-attack symptom. However, if you hold your breath or become especially tense during an anxiety attack, you can indeed cause pain and soreness in that area.

It could be anything from gas to a sign of an impending heart attack. For an accurate analysis see your Doctor.

Due to strenuous activity or stress there will be pain in that area caused by muscle strain. Go see your doctor if you are very concerned.

Have you talked to your Dr. about this? Your Dr. should be the one you ask, tests need to be made. Please don't just assume that it is a panic attack, make sure.
