This is a reality show gross-out eating contest staple, but they alway eat them with the downy feathers on. Have you ever had balut? It looks awful.

It was featured on "Survivor: China" last night, so I assumed it was an Asian dish. It was also featured on "Survivor: Palau". That is why I added "and other countries" to my question.

Yes they eat the fertilized egg - the embryo raw in the philippines and also they skewer the embryo (closed eyes, feathers, little beak) on sticks and grill over hot coal at street vendors then serve it with a spicy garlic vinegar dip or sauce.
I've seen it many times when I lived there.

In the Philippines, Balut is almost ready to hatch Duck, and it is considered quite a delicacy there. It is crunchewy I am told, but I could just not stomach the idea of it.

Yes, people really eat Balut. It is most popular in the Phillipines. And its a duck fetus not chicken.

PLEASE don't "learn" about the real world from shows like "Survivor", LOL! Balut is a delicious snack eaten most often in the Philippines, Cambodia, and Vietnam, I have never seen it eaten in China, but why not?

If you will eat a fried egg, or you will eat chicken meat, why would you NOT eat balut? How would that make sense?

Yes. I'm a Filipino and I think it's pretty mean spirited to go around eating babies, but whatever.

They eat it with feathers and bones in Vietnam and China, and it depends on what you want in the Philippines.

When I visited China, I did not see any such item either from street vendors or in restaurants. It is possible. Everyone in China told me that the the Chinese eat everything with legs except a table and everything with wings except an airplane.

Even in America, you can find them in Asian markets. Yes I have eaten them before but I've never eaten the chicken fetus. I remove that part and give it away to my mom or to who ever that likes it, I just eat the yolk part with salt/vinegar/black pepper of course. Eating it plain would be too nasty.

i know that a lot of people get grossed out with this type of food...but in some country, like mine (philippines), people eat them and its just a normal way of life...we have lots of delicacy which makes us unique from others, and like i've said, eating BALUT is a very grossed thing for foreigners who've never grew up in this kind of society...i say, i eat them (well, used to) and i love them, full of proteins and vitamins, tasty!...

Yeah, Asian people eat chicken fetus. Where it's looks like an egg but inside is almost a chick. They say is actually very healthy to people.
