some margarines contain milk proteins, such as whey, though there are many vegan brands that use no animal ingredients whatsoever. earth balance is my favorite, and i think smart choice makes a vegan margarine.

Some margarines have dairy ingredients in them, but Earth Balance spread is vegan. For baking, I use Willow Run margarine sticks.

Most is made from vegetable oils. Some do, however, contain milk products. Land O Lakes, for example, lists buttermilk as an ingredient.

No. Or goat milk or any other milk for that matter.
It's made from partially-hydrogenated vegetable oil. Which means, they take vegetable oil and shoot hydrogen atoms into it, making it opaque and semi-solid. This also creates those lovely things known as trans-fats!
I use real butter, but as this is the V&V section that won't work for ya. :)
I know that there are several brands of vegan-appropriate butter substitutes... try one of those instead of nasty margarine.

Not always.
It may contain nonfat dried milk, whey, etc., etc.
If you want to know if margarine is vegan, just stick to Earth Balance.

Yes, some do (usually just whey.) If you want a tasty butter alternative with no dairy, try Earth Balance. It's 100% vegan and non-hydrogenated.

margarine strictly speaking is made from plant sources. usually oils from plants do not solidify but having been treated using the hydrogenation system, chemical reactions occur that allow them to solidify at room temperature. so i believe it must not contain cow's milk.

well you will have to read the ingredients, but most that i have found like becel, parkay, ect. have "whey" in them which is code for milk so yes it does. they also sometimes have gelatin in them so if ur a vegan asking the question, then watch for that too

Read the ingredients. If you see whey, buttermilk, cream, or some other cow-derived ingredient, then yes.

No. Margarine is a vegetable fat processed to resemble the taste, texture, and appearance of butter. Although lacking the full, rich flavor of butter, margarine is used as a substitute by those who wish to limit animal fats in their diet.
