I can. It doesn't matter if I'm laying on my stomach, my back, or my side. I can count the heartbeats. I can also feel it if I'm sitting back against something, like a chair. And sometimes, I can faintly sense it when I'm just standing still. Is this normal? I'm 36 years old, and I'm VERY active. Not only do I workout a lot, but I perform very intense workouts... very strenuous. My average heart-rate is around 57-62bpm, and my blood pressure is always low. But, I just don't like the 'force' that my heart seems to beats at. One time I was laying in bed with an ex-girlfriend, and she even mentioned how 'hard' my heart beats. Could this be a sign of something bad??? I have no pain. No shortness of breath. No obvious symptoms of anything unusual besides a seemingly 'forceful' heartbeat.

What you're experiencing is entirely normal and is nothing to worry about in any way.

Because your heart rate is low and your circulation system is very well toned (ie. you are very fit from your exercise) you will occasionally be aware of the sound or feeling of your own heartbeat. This is more common when lying down flat.

Don't worry about it in any way but - if you haven't done so before - then the final bit of the jigsaw would be to get your blood pressure checked. I'm sure it will be normal but even very fit athletes can have low grade high blood pressure at times.

Hope this helps

My heart has always beat that way and more so pronounced when I had Hyperthyroidism. Then the heartbeat was noticeable and rapid, pulsing in my neck and flexing my chest as I lay still. Now, that the thyroid is normal, last 30 years, my heart still beats hard but slow. ( 55 bpm) I am 66 and feel healthy and blessed!
