I'm just curious as to what vegetarians use as their main dish in major dinners, such as holidays, or family gatherings, instead of turkey or ham.

There are plenty of fancy holiday meals that can be prepared without meat. Thanksgiving should be more about sharing a meal with family than having to have a turkey.

I usually eat the Quorn fake turkey(which is only because I don't feel like cooking a big thing). I have made vegetarian nut loaves on other occasions.

This year I may try:
Appetizer: Pumpkin Soup
Dinner: Stuffed Acorn Squash
Sides: Green bean casserole, roasted cauliflower, ect

I many times consume in basic terms the part stuff, like bread, vegetables, etc. and that i additionally from time to time make a Morning famous guy or woman burger or patti (they are vegetarian too) different than that i do no longer relatively have any "specific" meal or something simply by fact i'm the only vegetarian in my kin, so surely everyone else in basic terms eats a "widespread" thanksgiving meal.

I've cooked a couple of Thanksgiving dinners, and I made the typical sides--a stuffing, some cranberry sauce, a veggie dish. My boyfriend made this casserole (ick). I would make for a main dish a veggie loaf and varied it each time. You can check out the Adventist Loaf Studio, select the ingredients you have or want, and make your own loaf. Many vegan cookbooks or cooking websites have recipes for stuffing and gravy.

I am not a fan of the tofu-turkey or any fake made to look like an animal. I think that is hypocritical. Some people I know serve a baked pumpkin stuffed with traditional type stuffing. Others just serve all the side dishes that you would normally serve and don't really have a main dish persay. Others serve a soup based on typical foods such as a pumpkin or squash soup.

theres these pretty good little things called "TOfurkeys" that are large family -sized and shaped kinda like a ham. They're soy meat and you can carve it up and eat it like turkey slices with your mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberries, etc...

My vavorite though is "Worthington Smoked TUrkey" You buy it in a 4 lb "log" and slice it like bologana.. Then you put a spoonfull of stuffing on the slice, roll it like an enchilada.. line the rolls up in a casserole dish.. drown it with a fake chicken flavored gravy, and bake!! YUMMMMMMMM

I had a Tofurkey for the first time this thanksgiving.... OMG IT WAS SO GOOD! And I usually don't like soy products... gahhhh and the gravy was awesome...

Before that we used to eat walnut gnocchi(my favourite) or any sort of rice dish, with veggies and whatever vegan dessert my sister made.

JenasaurusX, your stuff sounds REALLY good.... I WANT SWEET POTATOES!!!!

i dont eat any birds, so thanksgiving isnt my favorite holiday. however there are plenty of other food. for me, of course there's ham, and most of the time, there are green beans, yam or potato dish available, dinner rolls and pie, cake, ice cream, etc, i think either you eat meat or not, you are not going to go hungry. if your family know you are vegetarian i am sure they will be sensitive about it. like my family knows i wont touch any chicken/turkey dishes.
