The bible did not exist then so what happened to everyone who died or lived as "pagans" this bible didn't exist then so what the hell happened to them, answers of the earth is only 10,000 years old will be treated with disdain and that still leaves 8,000 years of no god, jesus or the bible...this is not to have a go at christians but I am trying to get them to think for themselves about this question, you cant refer to the bible as it did not exist in this time frame,so what are your thoughts and how did you come to this INDEPENDENT thought process.

UHm no the earth IS millions of years old evolution proves that, and to say they probably went to hell just about sums up the bible, denouncing those who lived a good life because they were born long before god or jesus was ever invented, sounds hipocrytical to me,plus Australian aborigines have been scientifically tracked back to being 40,000 years old and that is an ironclad fact ie non disputable

Supposition does not replace facts, people DID exist before the word of your god had ever been uttered, and still I am answered with blind unsubstantiated faith...time to think of another question though I feel like trying to understand the bible and it's followers is like trying to plait fog, nigh on impossible....fact before GOD or the BIBLE people existed without the name of jesus the bible etc ever being uttered once, not as mentioned by some people, once again answer the question and use your brains not quotes from a book I will never accept as anything but man made...ever

Some very self informed answers I could relate to,some got the wrong end of the stick and didn't get the question at all. Some can argue christianity took their story from creation stories from tribal oral history, such as the great flood, mentioned in many cultures pre-christian in origin...what I was trying to get across is that christianity appeared not at the beginning of time but 20000 yrs aho in the form we know to day,so how could people born before that time be held accountable to a god that had never been mentioned before, and even if Jesus did exist, his word could surely not be found but in a small localized area, and even hundreds of years later could not of been heard over the majority of the planet as in many isolated areas in the world today who practise the same beliefs since time in memorium...anyway thats my thoughts, thanks for your answers so far...

I can't offer You an answer exactly as You are asking
I can offer You this however and You may see the similarities are striking
Buddhists believe there will be one thousand Buddhas who will visit this World before Our Sun goes super nova Sakyamuni was the fourth
It could therefore be true to say Before Christ there may have been other Teachers who's Teachings died out
Dhamma the Teachings of the Buddha does this
We are in what is termed The Dhamma Ending Age
Even in my lifetime I can see the changes regarding the Dhamma A little change here a little change there until over time they will have no meaning and die out
Not until the fifth Buddha Maitreya comes to the World will they be revealed for the fifth time
No one has ever found the Dhamma that was revealed by the third second or first Buddha
If we look at the real history of this World ...We can see it goes through these changes This proves the truth of impermanence
It is claimed 2012 or there about will bring in the next change The fact this age of Aquarius is a water sign for me speaks volumes

It isn't possible to answer in the way You want
You are presuming everyone lived as Pagans during that time which may or may not be true
Obviously much information is deliberately kept from us Other information has been distorted beyond belief some is downright lies
Looking at some of what is available
The Emerald Tablets of Thoth
This speaks of a time 16.000 years ago which is very different to what we are led to believe
These days History as we are taught is largely a lie
Credo Mutwa isn't the only Shaman in the World who for me tells it as it was
Let me relate the following to You that may show the above to be true
In the Alps there was a Glacier that had been melting a corpse was discovered when tests were carried out it was discovered this corpse was 500.000 years old
They discovered it's diet and illnesses but what they couldn't work out was the significance of a tatoo on a thigh a long line with a series of dots
It was only when an Acupuncturist looked at this He or She claimed this tatoo followed a meridian channel and the series of dots were the points that would be manipulated in curing this persons illness Half a million years ago in the West we are led to believe Acupuncture came from China only 5.000 years ago
So a question like this If You get one hundred answers very likely they will be one hundred different answers
How are You going to choose
The one that fits in with Your life experiences
What would You do if a Christian challenged Your view of reality

First of all, no matter how old you think humanity is, it is true that since there have been humans developed enough to worship, there has been religion.
In other words, "In the beginning...God". One of the very first things you notice in the Bible, is that even as God was explaining to Adam and Eve that there would be consequences for their disobedience, He was also planning ahead (see Gen. 3:15). Whether you believe that Genesis is a blow-by-blow description of events leading to the fall of mankind, or whether you think (as I do) that the tale is a parable told to teach an important principle, the fact remains that there is a foreshadowing of Christ here.
And, through the ages, there have been prophets foretelling His coming, and not only to the Jews. There seem to have been many different peoples looking forward to a "savior", and they seem to have believed that He would be divine. (Google "crucified saviors").
Jump ahead to the Calvary, and events there.
Mat 27:52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
Mat 27:53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
These people (and I'm betting there were similar events the world over, leading to the notion that the dead could arise and walk) had died believing the prophecies, and looking forward to His coming. They knew Who He was, and He took them with Him when He returned to Heaven. As the psalmist says, He lead captivity captive.
That is what I believe, after having read and studied not only the Christian Bible, but many other writings (some of which have been "suggested" by atheist friends online) that involve these ideas.
Of course, I think I am right, but I can understand if you do not. I can't, obviously, "prove" my conclusions...and each person's beliefs are intensely personal.
I hope this helps you to find what you are searching for!!

Judeo-Christian-Islamic answer: When the Savior dies or died he will or did first go to hell/hades/purgatory/Gehenna to bring those who died without hearing THE WORD of GOD but were righteous anyway to Heaven. At the end of days all others will be judged.
Alternate answer: Some reached enlightenment and got off the death and rebirth spiral dance and now exist on a higher plain while most are still with us working towards that goal. Some Enlightened Beings have Chosen to come back to help other along the way.

The Bible itself told in the Old Testament about how the law was used for salvation through the atonement sacrifices that the priests would kill and use the blood to anoint the Mercy Seat kept behind the veil of the Temple. Those that were alive during that time that abided by the physical law were redeemed spiritually as well through that sacrifice. However, if they died in their sins between passover seasons, they were probably doomed for there's no way for a dead person to receive atonement/communion and etc.

OK, looking at the other responses, no-one comes close, so here goes...
I believe Jesus is God and that he has always existed including before 4 billion years ago (roughly) when the earth's surface began to cool.
I think Jesus has always been active in his creation because he still is. Hence, somehow or other I expect he has made contact with all of our ancestors from Adam onwards including us, as he saw fit. I think this because; He is not limited by books, language or time and more recently, in the last 2000 years or so, he has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to us all, and to our wellbeing.
I have a degree level scientific education and I came by my thought process from that. I have also spent decades studying languages, texts and manuscripts and cross-checking my beliefs in multiple ways, for example across different Christian cultures and different ages in time.

well if you want an answer without using the Bible concerning pagans that lived during those years that you dont think God was around.
as a christian, i could look those things up. but it wouldnt change what i have read in the Bible.
if you want to know what my independent thought process is concerning your question....?
you say that you are trying to get me to think for myself and have independent thought process. but if that were true then why did you inject your evolutionary thinking - which implies how you want me to think about it.
you did not say that it was your opinion, neither did you ask for an opposite opinion...which makes me think that you are really wanting me to conform to the way that you think about it.
but if you really did want me to have an independent thought process, then you would encourage me to think independently from what you think about it.
and not try to imply that the way you think about it is the only correct independent thought process to have.

what happened to the pagans? they lived and died as pagans.

God came first.
Jesus came second.
Man was created by the above two.
After man sinned and lost his standing before God, the bible was written as a manual to help us get back to our original state of Theocracy.

Excellent question my fine thinking friend. Just so happens I wondered the same thing. In ancient times survival depended upon a close family group that worked together, forming societal boundaries with corresponding beliefs rooted in the earth, sky and spirit. So....power and control come into play with the written word, recorded to immortalize the power and glory of someone's interpretation of the divine. Folks then just followed along, kind of like now.

There were no people who lived 40,000 years before God. You have been brainwashed.
Where do you get that evolution has proven millions and billions of years - it has not proven this. This is just a theory - not fact. Carbon dating is based on the assumption that C14 has always been the same. More carbon in air today than 4000 yrs. ago. No accurate way to date. We can't base anything on the rate of anything being constant. The out of Africa debate of the 40,000 yr. humans is still ongoing.
I prefer to believe God who says that He is the first and the last and none came before Him.
You believe your little theories, assumptions and guesses. I have the Word of God and that is good enough for me.
