Thanks to you all! You all told that the difference is of staying. But I have seen some hotels, which do not provide accommodation to stay. They only supplied food. But the board on it shows it is a hotel.

well.. as everyone else said....

HOTEL is a normally an acomodation place.... in which u also have an eatery (i:e a restaurant.). Its like a big buissiness having multiple other bussiness...like restaurants, spa, sports complex etc...in one big bulding...named HOTEL....the purpose of these Hotels are to provide accomodation and food and any other need under one roof. Hence... basically restaurant comes under a hotel and is just an eating place alone.. .where food will be served... but no accomodation will be provided.

You may also find Restaurants... which are solitary and are not linked with any hotels. These are mainly food joints and fast foods..which provide no accomodation and the purpose is to just serve food to the customers.

A MOTEL is a place where only accomodation is provided and maybe can have complimetary breakfast....but no full fledge dinning or lunch place. The purpose of a motel is to just provide accomodation. It is also known as Lodge.

Now coming to your query about many restaurant having the name as HOTEL..where as they dont provide accomodation...well the answer for that would be ignorance of vocabulary. For example....If u see in indian.. people specially rural people... will understand well if u say its a hotel....than saying a restaurant... this word restaurant came to being familiar with people..... only around 7-8 yeras back.... coz i remember as i kid telling my dad that" i want to go to hotel to eat today.....".even now many learned people say...hotel for a restaurant......whereas they actually mean a restaurant ....

hence u see many restaurant... having the board of a hotel an not restaurant....as the term is not very familiar with the lower middle class or lower class.....

guess iam making sense....

A hotel is a building where rooms complete with furniture are rented to people. This includes the room service like cleaning, changing the bed sheets, etc. and also having ones prepared meals and drinks served to the room if one desires so. There are also meals available in common rooms like in restaurants. Some hotels offer only 'bed and breakfast', although there are often called 'hostel'. Many hotels also offer other services like sauna, swimming pool, conference and party rooms, etc. One can stay one night or as long as one want and is able to pay. There are hotels one has to pay in advance and others one pays when one leaves.
Restaurants are buildings were food and drinks are sold. One can consume these in a closed room with many tables or some times the tables are on an open terrace. The prepared food and the drinks are served by a person called waiter (what some times means that one has to wait quite some time after one has ordered...) There can be TV in the room or in exclusive restaurants there can be a life band. One can also sleep in a restaurant after the meal, especially if one had too much drinks, but this has to happen without bed and is not seen well by the restaurant owner. One also has to behave and can't sing or make other noise to express oneself. like burbling and farting.
It is the same in hotels and restaurants: One has to pay the expensive bill and then they expect a generous tip, if not they look at you with a strange face and think you are a ******, miser, niggard, skinflint, meanie and tightwad. But in general people who verve's you in hotels and restaurants are nice people, but of course one pays for it and the smile in included. What doesn't mean that some times they are really friendly, although they are often stressed out because there are many people who abuse them, but with this there is no difference anywhere...

True what you say that some of the boards read Hotel but no accomodation but if you check guide lines by FHARAI (Federation of Hotel and Resaturant Association India their manual (guidelines) and dictionary meaning of the these two words are
Hotel :- a commercial establishment offering lodging to travelers and sometimes to permanent residents, and often having restaurants, meeting rooms, stores, etc., that are available to the general public.

Resataurant :- an establishment where meals are served to customers.

Hope this will help you ?

those restaurants who put the board as "hotel" do the same 4 only 2 reasons (i suppose):
1) 2 make it attractive 4 ppl, that its a hotel and serves better than other so -called restaurants
2) or they dont know the difference between hotel and restaurant

else there's only one difference between the 2; one can also stay in a hotel along with eating while only eating is served in a restaurant

Hotels are classified according to their facilities like 1 star, 2 star, 3 star, 4,5, 7 like that. But restaurants need not be classified like that. More over liquor bars and overnigt stay are provided in hotels where as restaurants not.

A restaurant is a dining establishment

When I was in India, the word Hotel in the small villages / town referred to a small restaurant that served coffee, tea, some meals ... sometimes it looked as though there might be 3 or 4 rooms available, often not...

In larger cities, a Hotel is a larger building offering overnight accommodation and meals, often large public rooms for social functions, like weddings, business meetings, etc

Restaurant is a part of hotel, its a small unit.

In a hotel you can eat, live as well but in a restaurant you can eat only. In restaurant there is no arrangement for rooms to live.

Restaurants are close at night but hotel not because of there day night arrangement to live in.
