33 people support homosexual behaviors. 25 of those are bigots*.

17 people oppose homosexual behaviors. 13 of those are bigots*.

From this very limited sample it looks like both sides are equally bigoted*.

* The operational definition of Bigot for this survey is #6 and #7 don't match and #8 was answered yes.

I also asked this same question under the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender category and got similar results.

Let me preface this by saying that I am a Christian...I do not wish to offend anyone, however, I have a feeling that this is inevitable.

1. The Bible clearly states that homosexuality is a sin. If sin is a choice, then yes, homosexuality must be a choice. Why would God say something is wrong, then force someone to do it without a choice?

However, some people that have homosexual feelings do not wish to be homosexual, so how is that a choice? I think it's that it's just like any other sin, you can be strongly tempted even if you don't want to. As for WHY one would have those feelings, I have no idea. Why do I want to eat all the time? I'm not hungry. I'm just very tempted.

2. Engaging in homosexual relations/intercourse certainly is a choice. Your thoughts and feelings may or may not be, but your actions are totally under your control, unless you're clinically insane. No one and nothing can "make" you do anything, therefore it's a choice.

3. This ties into the first question...if sin isn't moral, and it's a sin, then yes, it's morally wrong.

4. I believe it is morally wrong, because you can control your actions, and to engage in homosexual behaviors is blatantly sinning. Again, relates to question 2.

5. To be brief, if I agreed to this question, I would be discrediting myself. So I must disagree. And wouldn't it be "stupid, ignorant, or closed minded" to apply those terms to someone because their beliefs differed from yours?

6. It is not stupid, ignorant, or closed minded to believe that homosexuality IS acceptable, though. It certainly isn't close minded, since it goes against much of society. It's not stupid or ignorant either (unless you have no basis for your beliefs, and that applies to everyone). Rather, I would say it is misinformed and anti-Christian.

7. No one side is more entitled to their beliefs than the other. Of course both sides believe they are right, as I do, but everyone can have their beliefs. It's a right. However, I get angry with Christians who hate gays or discriminate against them -- I don't agree with homosexuality and God does not either, and I cannot advocate it, but God loves everyone. It isn't Christian to hate others or to deny others a choice.

8. Yes. This speaks for itself.

9. Yes. Definitely. This is what annoys me about those who claim they are "tolerant". You aren't being tolerant if you only tolerate those like you because you believe that your beliefs are themselves tolerant. Furthermore, it is impossible for ANYONE to ever be completely tolerant. If you did, you'd be denying ever having an opinion on anything.

10. I consider myself intelligent and open-minded. I am a student and do well in school and I consider myself to be logical. I believe I am fairly open-minded as I have friends of many different races and beliefs, and have had people who were gay or bisexual state that they liked me (and not in *that* way) when they knew full well my beliefs. I believe in non-confrontational logic. Confrontation has its place, but you won't win any converts to anything that way.

1. Is same-sex attraction a choice? Very mildly. One can talk oneself into or out of a lot of things, but I think some there seems to be some sort of baseline sexual attraction in a given person.

2. Is engaging in homosexual relationships or homosexual intercourse a choice? Yes. Celibacy's an option.

3. Is same-sex attraction morally wrong? Nope.

4. Are homosexual relationships or homosexual intercourse morally wrong? Given consent, no.

5. Is it stupid, ignorant or closed minded to believe that homosexual behaviors are morally wrong? It can be any of the three. My personal observation is that people tend to fear homosexuals until they've actually met a few.

6. Is it stupid, ignorant or closed minded to believe that homosexual behaviors are morally acceptable? No.

7. Is one side of the issue more entitled to their beliefs than the other? Well, yes, not to put too fine a point on it. If you don't find the same sex attractive, well, don't sleep with 'em. Trying to forbid what other consenting adults do with each other is pretty vile.

8. Is it bigotry to treat people like they're stupid, ignorant or closed minded simply because their beliefs differ from your own? I try not to hate the haters until they're threatening legislation.

9. If you are only open to your own views or the views of those like you isn't that the definition of closed minded? Done with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. I guess Fred Phelps has a perfectly valid point of view too, from your angle?

10. Do you consider yourself to be intelligent & open minded? Yup. Keep swingin'!

1. Is same-sex attraction a choice? No

2. Is engaging in homosexual relationships or homosexual intercourse a choice? So is engaging in heterosexual intercourse. But this is fueled by the NON choice to be homosexual.

3. Is same-sex attraction morally wrong? Of course not

4. Are homosexual relationships or homosexual intercourse morally wrong? Nope

5. Is it stupid, ignorant or closed minded to believe that homosexual behaviors are morally wrong? Yes

6. Is it stupid, ignorant or closed minded to believe that homosexual behaviors are morally acceptable? no

7. Is one side of the issue more entitled to their beliefs than the other? No but I also don't believe all opinions are equal. If someones opinion is fueling hatred and keeping a group of people from having basic rights and from being treated equally then that is a wrong opinion. You are entitled to have and to voice that opinion but that doesn't make it good or right.

8. Is it bigotry to treat people like they're stupid, ignorant or closed minded simply because their beliefs differ from your own? bigotry is acting on hatred (like keeping gays from marrying)...

9. If you are only open to your own views or the views of those like you isn't that the definition of closed minded? Absolutely, never said I was perfect. But I see myself as being intolerant towards intolerance.

10. Do you consider yourself to be intelligent & open minded? I try...

1) if I asserted that same-sex atraction was a choice, then that would indirectly be saying that other-sex attraction was *also* a choice. and my experience does not evidence to this to be so.(other-sex attraciton for me is/was not a choice, so how can I say same sex attraction is wrong?)

2) is engaging in those acts a choice? of course it is. you CHOSE to do those things. that is not really a matter of opinion. (situations where someone forced you or whatever don't count...only when its voluntary, and the nature of it being voluntary includes it being a choice)

3) my beliefs don't regulate thoughts in that manner. they regulate actions. some things emotions intent and thoughts matter, but some things its actions. this is largely an action issue.

4) according to the old testament the act of homsexual intercourse, at least between males, is not acceptable. but beyond this I have a hard time declaring it more than "to each their own"

5) depends how its done. in some situations it might be. in some situations it might not.

6) I'm not sure how it would be... thats weird.

7) if their beliefs are only "pushed" as far as their own behavior, then no. they are both entitled to their opinions.
if they try to push it on the other, then that is where it gets to be a problem.
the REAL problem is when its perceived as being pushed onto the other, when in reality its not. this goes in both directions.

8) on this topic like most others, yes.

9) I'd say so.

10) generally, yes.

1. Is same-sex attraction a choice? Partly. It can either be rejected or cultivated.

2. Is engaging in homosexual relationships or homosexual intercourse a choice? Yes. We have free will. Most homosexual men (about 2/3) have had sexual intercourse with a woman.

3. Is same-sex attraction morally wrong? Only if cultivated. A fleeting attraction is not wrong; it is a temptation.

4. Are homosexual relationships or homosexual intercourse morally wrong? Yes. Jesus taught that sexual immorality makes a man unclean. Matt 15:19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what make a man 'unclean'; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him 'unclean.' "

5. Is it stupid, ignorant or closed minded to believe that homosexual behaviors are morally wrong? No, it is intelligent, the understanding of a critical mind. It might be fair to say faith in Christ is "closed-minded" because it is "closed" to experimentation and to credulity about views contrary to Christian teaching.

6. Is it stupid, ignorant or closed minded to believe that homosexual behaviors are morally acceptable? I would call it mistaken. It may be too OPEN-minded and insufficiently critical.

7. Is one side of the issue more entitled to their beliefs than the other? Everyone is entitled to opine, believe, and offer their views freely under the First Amendment.

8. Is it bigotry to treat people like they're stupid, ignorant or closed minded simply because their beliefs differ from your own? It might be disrespectful or uncharitable without rising to the level of bigotry.

9. If you are only open to your own views or the views of those like you isn't that the definition of closed minded? That depends on where the preponderance of the evidence lies. Closed-minded could be a negative way of saying faithful, or having sufficient evidence to reach the truth.

10. Do you consider yourself to be intelligent & open minded? Intelligent, yes; open-minded to evidence, yes; but closed minded to wrongdoing and false-claims argued without evidence.

Cheers,
Bruce
