Depends on where or what part of the body needs surgery?
They can do a spinal injection to numb certain areas, they operate on the brain with Patient wide awake.

There are many variables that must be factored into this...are you talking about general anesthesia, contious sedation, or local anesthesia. MS04, Morphine Sulfate is not an anesthetic, it is an opiate or used for pain. The next question would be, what type of surgery and does the risk of having the surgery outway the risk of NOT having the surgery are we talking about open heart surgery here or something minor. Surgeons if possible will mostly do what is in the best interest of the patient or take the least invasive route.

If you are worried about general anaesthesia a local is good. I had my knee opened up under local, as I need loads of tubes to help me breath. The are of operation is numbed and as they operate, continually numb the area. Also a patient is monitored very carefully, so they know how much to give them.

It depends on what the operation is on. If below waist can have an epidural. But when a patient is 85 there are lots of other risk factors to consider.
