Typically, at a dim sum restaurant, the food is pushed around on a cart and you can pick dishes that look appealing.

The food is cut into bite-size pieces and consist of meat and seafood dumplings, buns, deep fried goodies, rolled rice noodles, rice bowls, sweet and savory dishes, mystery meat dishes (chicken feet, duck feet, tripe... etc).

Stuff like Singapore noodles and fried rice are usually ordered off a menu and not on the carts.

In regards to being put off to unusal stuff, just go in with an open mind. It won't kill you and you might have fun trying something different. We eat with our minds and eyes so don't pyche yourself out before you even get to the restaurant. It's wasted energy.
