I'm not familiar with all the different types of onions. I want to add them to my diet, but I'm looking for one that doesn't have a lot of odor.

Does anyone know of a specific onion that doesn't put off a strong smell?

To reduce the strong odor/taste of onions: Slice and soak in ice water for 30 or more minutes. Other than that look for sweet varieties like vidalia.

I've tried them all. Like you I don't care for the strong ones. The best I"ve found are the "Silver" ones, a lot of times just called "white onions".....They're fairly good sized, try to buy the shiniest ones with no gray or black spots.......You'll find that they cost a little more than the others but certainly not enough to not buy them.

Texas Vidalia Onions are the sweetest and I think this is why I don't like them. They are great on a burger, but if you cook with them, you don't get the rich flavor that onions provide in your foods.

The big white onions. I don't know specifically what they are called, but my experience is, the bigger they are, the waterier they are, the more mild they are...small ones, especially with the tightly packed layers are usually pretty strong.

RedSky said it...Vidalia. Those are the ones I'm talking about.

there are Texas sweet onions
and the green onions are more milder
peeling onions under running water helps with the strong smell.
If your eyes water while peeling them --just stick your head in the freezer it will take away the burning.

Yeah, the purple onions are too powerful for me. I like the brown onions.
