Some abnormalities on EKG are trivial and some are truly life-threatening. Often the doctor will decide how serious an abnormality seen on an EKG is based on what else he knows about the patient - that is, the EKG needs to be interpreted in the context of the patient's overall health, age, symptoms, etc.

Usually the best way to address these worries is to ask the doctor flat out - "Doc, how much do I need to worry about that abnormality on my EKG?" Don't be shy!

Most people have a "abnormal" heart rate. Breathing can influence heart rate. Called sinus arrhythmia. You dont hear it much because most people associate arrhytmia with something bad. But in reality it means the heart rate is irregular.

To test this out, Try holding your breath and measure your heart rate. It should slow. Now breath fast and look at the difference. Stress and other things can also influence heart rate.

so if your talking about abnormal h eart rate, maybe it isnt so "abnormal" after all.

I would discuss what the abnormality is with your doctor and if you should be concerned. Only your doctor knows what type of abnormality that you are dealing with. If you have not seen a cardiologist then I would request to do so. You may need further testing.

If your ekg is not normal, then you should have further tests. An echo gram can detect nearly all problems. I am surprised your doctor has not ordered one for you.Talk to him/her about it.
