Where to start....

Definitely "And the Band PLayed On" by Randy Shiltz as mentioned by Gumdrop girl. Excellent book.....long, but great.

I would also recommend:
- Letters from the Holocaust, by Larry Kramer

-AIDS in the 21st Century (Barnett and Whiteside)

-PBS's recent documentary Frontline: The Age of AIDS which you can view online:

'And the Band Played On' by Randy Shilts - this book gives the history of the AIDS epidemic starting in the late 70's into the 80's. It was written just before HAART, back when AIDS was a definite death sentence. Gives great historical perspective on attitudes and events surrounding the AIDS era.

I'd also read up on immunology to get a good grasp of how HIV affects the body.
