Old fashioned advice is best:

First, drink lots of water. It thins down the mucous and crap that builds up in your head or chest, and helps flush your body of the very stuff that's making you miserable when you have a cold - histamine.

Do take extra doses of vitamin C. It's best to drink it in orange juice or eat whole oranges, but supplements are good too. Just don't overdose on it - the side effect will be diarrhea, and that's not a good trade off.

Perhaps the most effective thing is what Grandma used to recommend: Gargle with warm salt water. Every hour on the hour if need be. We didn't listen to her because we thought it wasn't making our throats feel any better.....but she didn't tell us that so it would soothe our throats. Bacteria and infection gather where the pain is (in this case, in your throat), and warm salt water has a cleansing action that makes it a very uncomfortable environment for those germs. I have actually stopped a cold in its tracks on more than one occasion by gargling at the first sign of a sore throat.

The sooner you start, the better off you'll be and the quicker the results. Once you let it get to a "I-can-barely-swallow" and "I'm-miserable" stage, this won't really make that much difference.......

I know there are also over-the-counter products that claim to cut the duration of a cold in half....I have personally never tried them. Mostly because I don't trust medicines, even OTC. There is usually a side-effect or a trade-off where meds are concerned, but you may want to ask around and see if any of your friends have tried these products and how it worked for them.

Good luck! Hope you feel better right away.

Take a simple pain reliever to keep your body feeling the best possible. Drink hot clear liquids to keep the mucus thin and runny.

No dairy while you have the cold, it makes for more congestion by thickening the mucus.

I always use Vicks vaporub at night to break it up in your chest and sinuses before it settles in to those areas.

Get plenty of rest. Good Luck.

They usually last 10 days, no matter what you do.

This year there has been a cold strain going around that has been lasting into the second month. So take care of yours in the very beginning.

There is no cure for the common cold. The best you can do is help your body fight the virus so you can get over it faster. Drink lots of water and take supplements like Vitamin C and Zinc. This will boost your immune system. To fight the symptoms, you want something with Capsaicin (a natural decongestant). You can find it in some over the counter remedies, or you can eat any kind of fresh pepper (like Bell peppers or Jalepeno) and get it directly.

get a zinc cold medicine, either the gel you squirt in your nose or the lozenges called cold-eze. There are credible studies that show zinc based treatments reduce the severity and duration of colds, but only if you start taking it immediately when you first detect the symptoms of a cold. I've used both and found them to be beneficial. The lozenges also make everything taste kind of drab, so if you are trying to lose weight, you get a bonus there!

First of all take some Vitamin C. The best is Ester-C cause it's stomach friendly. Drink planty of fluids, drink some warm honey tea, make some homemade vegetable soup with garlic, oregano and lots of other spices, put Vicks on your chest and under your nose.

Go to the Health food store and get the tinture-Echinacea. It will cut your days of sickness in half! Eat a rainbow...dark greens and purples are best. Be well.
Get a massage for you aching muscles. Drink water all day to keep those headaches away. Excercising dispels toxins that need to be rinsed out.
