Asthma can appear at any point in one's life. There are actually two types of asthma, dinstinguished by what causes each of them. Extrinsic (aka allergic, or atopic asthma) is asthma that is caused by some type of environmental irritant (e.g. pollen). In extrinsic asthma, the person is hypersensitive to the environmental element. This type of asthma is most common in young children. The second type of asthma, called intrinsic asthma (aka nonallergic, or nonatopic asthma) occurs in the absence of any external irritant. In other words, there is no particular stimulus that causes the asthma. This type of asthma most commonly appears after 40 years of age. Given her history of smoking, chronic bronchitis is also a possibility, as well as emphysema. A doctor can perform a simple set of tests to dinstinguish which disease may actually be present. All three of these diseases (emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and asthma) belong to a large group of diseases referred to as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Only a doctor can distinguish which specific disease may be present. Hope this helps.

My brother is an asthmatic and after ten years his asthma has shown no sign of improving. He has been to several doctors but they didn't help much.
If you want a proven, all-natural way to cure your asthma, without having to pay for useless medications with harmful side-effects, then this is the most important page you'll ever read.
