the first six months are the hardest. what got me through my first six months was all that fake meat that's out there. veggie burgers, fakin' bacon, tofu hot dogs, etc.

whole grains and potatoes will fill you up and help you get through these tough times. so will two secret weapons: eggplant and mushrooms! they make great "steaks" and give a meaty texture to sandwiches and salads. portabellos are excellent mushrooms to substitute for meat.

don't give up! after the first six months the cravings will more than likely disappear! mine did and now i've been veggie for 13 years without any cravings (well, i do miss shrimp every now and then. but i get past it).

It's okay to drool over a nugget every once in a while... you're only human. That being said, I'm also a vegetarian (about five months now), and I can understand your dilemma. If you don't want to continue eating meat, but are still salivating for the taste, then you need to try some of the fake stuff. Boca and Morningstar Farms make lots of fake "meats", including chick'n nuggets. Try to remember why you're a vegetarian, and think about if a nugget is really worth giving it all up.

After two months, I didn't even crave meat, and the smell of it wasn't good anymore. It's really all just a matter of time. Be strong for just a little longer and I think everything will be ok.

Vegetarianism shouldn't be about sacrifice. You are gaining so much more. If you aren't liking the foods you are eating now, or you feel too restricted in what you eat, find some new recipes for vegetarians on the web and find a new favorite... something even better than a nugget.

As for the recipe, this is my favorite:
My Lazy A** Chili (I just started throwing stuff in a crock-pot one day... and it tasted good)

3 cans Bush's Blackeye Peas
1 can Bush's Navy Beans
1 can Bush's Red Beans (or Kidney Beans)
3 cans Rotel Chili Fixin's
(I've checked all the ingredients for these brands... no soy or cheese, actually... they're all vegan as far as I know)

Put it all in a slow cooker (like a crock-pot) or if you want it quick, just put it all in a big pot and bring it almost to a boil, then let it simmer for 15 minutes. I like getting a lot of tortillas and making burritos out of it, or you could make cornbread to go with it... whatever you want.

Hope this helps.

I see a lot of things that I know would probably taste good to the old me. I have always been a sucker for new products so when I see things like all the chipotle chicken stuff being offered everywhere or those new chicken shakers they have at Arbys or the buffalo chicken salad or foccacia bread at Souplantation I think, "Why couldn't they have had that before I started caring about my health and how abusive the animal product industries are?" And that's the end of it. I recognize things that I would have liked back then, but it doesn't mean I have to eat them now. I care more about my convictions than some food that is just going to get chewed up, swallowed, and shat out, leaving behind cholesterol and unhealthy fat and increasing my chances for disease in the process. It's just not worth it and I'm not some kind of animal that can't control myself. And the same goes for you! You are better than that and you know deep down those nuggets are gross. Imagine all those chickens hung up by their feet, some of them still flapping around when they get dipped into boiling water. Imagine all that chicken crap and the nasty juice from burst organs getting all over the meat before it gets ground up for the nuggets. Imagine dirty factory workers putting their hands all over that meat that begins rotting as soon as the chicken is dead. It's just nasty and you should feel sorry for people who are still oblivious to what they're shoving in their mouths.

Remember that we don't eat meat in it's natural state (raw) and that we use different names to call the meat so that it detaches us from what we are eating. We say, "Aw, it's just a nugget." when in fact it is a piece of a poor, dead, often mistreated animal. We also call chickens "broilers" and ground up cows "hamburgers". It's easier to lose the connection to what you are actually eating. It's not your fault. You might want to watch a few PETA videos to keep in mind why you decided to stop eating meat. Go on line and get a handful of recipes that are easy and fun. Take food with you when you go out. You can do it!!! Take care.

Most vegetarians get tempted by meat when they first stop eating it. Just tell yourself "I am a vegetarian now. It's who I am, it was my choice. I do not need meat." and find other things you can eat in it's place. New "favorite dishes."

Buy yourself some fake chicken nuggets. They're yummy!!

Would you eat a cat or dog nugget? Think about that when thinking about eating the chicken nugget. FYI, there are veggie chicken nuggets and the ones I've had are quite good.

ok, i'd love to help because i cook all the time for the family and my mom is a vegetarian too. Dont only think about the animals, but think about the healthy chioce your making for your future (Less fat, cabrohydrates, etc). Your heart will work better, your weight will be lesser, and you will feel more better about your self. Try waking up everyday with a smile, drink a warm cup of water early in the morning. And plan a helahty diet for yourself. Life is wonderful, and good luck.

honestly, that will take some time. soon you will forget about the taste and you will find it extremely disgusting! just imagine slaughtered animals.. you know they cut off chicken's beeks with a hot blade while they are still alive? its very sad. or go to Peta.com and watch meet your meat. those videos stick in your head and as soon as you see meat again you will think of it as the devil. well at least i do, i don't know what other people think... but anyways.... just think of it as deal animal corps... very disturbing. i honestly don't see how people can eat meat. very gross... but good luck with the whole vegetarian thing! its a great lifestyle

All that "sacrificing" is in your head and you are not grasping "reality". You are stressing yourself over absolutely nothing . . . false and inflammatory propaganda has warpped your common sense as it does to so many especially on this forum.

There are more important ways to alleviate cruelty and suffering ... volunteer at a hospital, at a homeless shelter, at a food shelf . . .you are just wasting your time and energy on silliness. Have a nugget and enjoy life.
