A few things can be triggering your cough. It is likely that you have a respiratory infection in which you need to get an antibiotic such as Azithromycin but you will need a doctor to write a prescription for this medication. You can have an irritant in your lungs or throat that needs to be flushed out. I recommend you take fiber capsules and drink plenty of water throughout the day. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, maybe even more. The reason is that if it is an irritant in your lungs, you want to flush it out and drinking lots of water will help do this.

Over the counter there is Delsym or Robitussin DM which both have Dextromethorphan in it which is a cough suppressant. I would also take some anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil or Motrin (ibuprofen) because when tissue is inflamed it means it is irritated and agitated to a great extent. You need this inflammation to go down in order to get better so I would try taking a few (two) of the 200mg tablets of ibuprofen every 6 hours. It is important you take them every six hours because every dose builds off the one before it. If you miss a dose you are allowing the inflammation to continue.

Try this and see if it helps, otherwise it could be a respiratory infection. Hope this helps, stay healthy.

Several possibilities come to mind, including Acid Reflux.

Does the cough seem connected with some foods? If so, try eliminating them from your diet.

Do you perhaps have sleep apnea? Sometimes there is a cough associated with that.

Are you eating enough? My husband didn't for a while, and he coughed all the time. What about drinking enough water?

Is the air in your house dry? With winter coming on, a lot of us use dry heat. And sometimes the dry air will cause a cough. In which case, the solution could be as simple as leaving a pan of water warming on the stove, perhaps with some potpourri in it.

If none of those apply, get a check-up.

Good luck!
