and I was going to do (as promised, they will be expecting this) a garlicky - mixed wild mushrooms in a cream sauce in flaky pastry served with a warm spinach and courgette salad and garlic bread.
Please note they are Vegetarian NOT vegan, and they have no allergies so what should I do for a starter?
I have tons of tomatoes in my greenhouse still, i could make a fresh tomato and basil soup perhaps,
or an egg mayonnaise - would that be too heavy?

.............I don't think half of you are reading the question.......I can't do two dishes with bread and garlic, so the tomato crostini are out, they are expecting the mushroom thing, that's not going to change.........Jessica.....great sounding pet but they're all too heavy as a starter.............

I think your idea of a tomato basil soup would be a lovely start to this meal. I would put out the garlic bread with the soup, then leave it out for the main course.
Alternatively, you could start with a nice tomato bruscetta and drop the garlic bread from the main course. This would really feature your fresh tomatoes to their fullest. Garlic bread might be a bit heavy to eat alongside a creamy pastry dish anyway.
Looking over your menu, I don't see any source of protein. Consider including sliced fresh mozzerella with the bruscetta. Also consider adding chick peas to the spinach and courgette salad.

A personal favorite of mine (when I have fresh tomatoes) is a tomato/basil/mozzarella dish served over a sliced and toasted baguette. Here's the concept:
4-5 medium tomatoes / 1 bunch fresh basil / fresh mozzarella / olive oil / balsamic vinegar / salt / pepper.
On a deep plate alternate slices of tomato and mozzarella so they have a nice overlapping pattern. Finely slice the basil and scatter on top (you do want a fair amount of this). Drizzle with oil and vinegar. Then flavor with fresh ground pepper and salt.
Serve this with toasted rounds of baguette.
This is a party favorite at my house.

Well there are many different choices: How about Eggplant Parm with a salad & breadstix, or Bkd Ziti with no meat & a salad & breadstix, you can go mexican & do bean buritos with all of the veggie fixins & cheese & sourcream & have some spanish rice with it (just be sure to make sure on the back label that there is no meat seasoning in it), Cheese Quesadillas, All Bean Chilli & make some corn muffins with it. Make what you would normally eat, and they will have to like it, if you were going to a VEGGIE persons house they would not go out of their way to cook you a steak or a lamb chop, I have never been mad about meat, but I never expected my friends to do me a special menu if I visited, I would eat what was there that I liked.
