My fiance wants to make a blood promise, in a romantic setting under the moon or somethin... we're both going to prick our index fingers with a needle and we'll have our fingers touch as we say our vows to each other...cheesy I know...but hey I think it's romantic.

Is it bad if our blood mixes like that? Could we die or get really sick from that? I think we're the same blood type...but if hypothetically we weren't...would this be bad? (and no neither of us have HIV lol)

Hepatitis B and C and HIV can be readily transmitted in this manner. Regrettably, all three illnesses can be dormant in a person - that is, they show no symptoms but they can still transmit the illness. There are other blood borne illnesses but they're either quite rare or the person who has them is obviously quite sick at the time that they could transmit the illness.

In terms of blood types, there's no need to worry if you are different blood types. The amount of blood being exchanged here is small and the blood isn't going directly into another person's veins so there's no chance of a blood type mismatch reaction.

Blood borne illnesses such as the ones listed above are an issue, however.

I just have to respond to the posting by galaxor. WRONG!!

The amount of blood that would be exchanged is lots! More than having unprotected sex could ever produce.

There are many diseases that have a difficult time transmitting sexually (like Hepatitis C) but easily would transmit from blood-to-blood exchange.

What your fiance wants to do is the same as sharing a needle - exactly the same, so be sure you know what you are getting into.

If your fiance has been checked for every blood carried disease, has never injected drugs, hasn't had unprotected sex, hasn't travelled a lot... maybe it would be ok - maybe!

Why not just write a poem? Much safer!

If neither of you has a blood borne disease, that's fine. Honestly, even if you did, the amount of blood we're talking about is so small that it probably wouldn't matter. Similarly with blood type - any incompatible substance in your blood will trigger an immune response, but for such a small amount it'll hardly make a difference.
