Hi, I am currently vegetarian, have been for the last 14 years. Recently I have given thought to going vegan. My only concern is that I will have absoultely NOWHERE to go eat if me and my husband want to go out for dinner (he is not vegetarian). I already find it hard enough to find a vegetarian item on the menu, I can only imagine that it would be impossible to find a vegan item. And I'm sorry, but I would want more than a SALAD when going out for dinner. How do vegans do it?
Thanks!

Have you tried foreign restaurants? Moroccan places serve great vegetable couscouses, for example. Japanese restaurants will often have avocado, cucumber or radish sushi or maki, which are yummy. Indian restaurants have a lot of vegetarian food, just ask if it's not cooked with ghee (which is butter). Dishes like aloo gobi (made with potatoes and cauliflower) should be vegan. Italian places do vegetable pizzas (just check there are no eggs in the base).

I live in France, one of the most meat-eating countries in the world, I should think, and I do ok ;-) So you should to. Just ring them and ask!

Go vegan :-)

if you are going to an upscale restaurant, i have always phoned ahead that day and let the chef know im vegan. my boyfriend used to work as a chef and said that as long as you give them time to think up something that they really enjoy the challenge of something different. most of the time my meat eating and vegetarian friends who are with me end up ordering the same thing im getting because it looks so good!

I live in a city with ample vegan options.

But if you don't, ethnic places should be able to accommodate you--most Chinese places can do a tofu stir fry. Indian places are pretty good for vegetarians (hopefully they can leave out the dairy for you). If you get pizza, get a cheeseless pie topped with veggies.

Many restaurants will prepare some of their dishes vegan-style upon request. Just ask the waiter.
