PBS did a documentary last year call 25 years of AIDS. In that special it was suggested that hunters in Africa had be attacked by the monkeys they were hunting over time the blood of the monkeys got mixed with the blood of the hunters. This is one suggested scenario. The truth of the matter is, HIV and AIDS are here, how it started really does not matter, we need to look into research and move forward.

The first recognized cases of AIDS where in the 1980's. Keep in mind that is just when it was recognized as a disease and not the year it originated.

No one really knows, considering how long it might have been going on quite a while before the 'official' medical community paid attention. But it was known by the mid 1980's.
