My brother eats only fruits, vegetables, and nuts. No processed food or animal products. Do you guys think that is a healthy and balanced way to eat? What do you think will happen to him in the long run?

He'll be fine.
Look around, there are people that generally live on coffee, doughnuts, chips, pop...and all sorts of other non-foods.
As long as he doesn't mix them all together at one meal, thus causing indigestion, sounds OK to me.

Humans can actually live very well on fruits alone, as I know some that do so for a very long time. So... there's your answer.

He's gonna die.

But if you're eating too much meat, you're probably gonna die first.

hehe j/k

As long as he's eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, and also getting enough carbohydrates and protein, he should be fine. Nuts take care of the protein part. It's hard to say without more details on his exact diet, but if it's been a month or two on this diet and he hasn't shown any signs of his health getting worse, then in all likelihood the diet is fine.

If he is balancing his diet properly than he should be fine. He should also be eating whole grains, and beans. The fact that he is not eating processed food, or "garbage" food as it should be called is a good thing. Processed foods are not as healthy as real, fresh foods. It would be the equivalent of someone who eats meat, but doesn't eat McDonalds, or frozen chicken nuggets(not eating that would be considered a good thing). Just because your brother is vegan it does not mean he need to live on boca burgers, and fake chicken patties.

There is nothing about being a vegan that will hurt him in the long run(if he is doing it properly). People who tell you otherwise are usually omnivores that know nothing or very little about being a vegan, they rely on "what they have heard" as their sources of information, not acutual researched facts.

Yes, he's going to die. But then so are you. And so am I. And so is everyone posting on this board. We are all going to die eventually.

He might want to add some grains and beans to his diet, especially quinoa, a South American grain that is a perfect protein. I think it's great that he doesn't eat processed food and wish I had such discipline (I'm a vegan junk food junkie!). Provided he gets enough calories and eats a variety of plant foods, he will probably be fine.

He should add some legumes, seeds and whole grains to his diet as well. A balanced, whole foods vegan diet is very healthy. He will want to consider B12 supplements, as mentioned by a previous poster. In the long run, he's less likely than a meat eater to get cancer, heart disease or diabetes.

The success of our species is a result of our ability to survive on a wide variety of foods. We are omnivorous. Vegans can live long healthy lives, although they sometimes don't have enough protein and/or calcium in their diets. Certain combinations (the classic is beans and brown rice) can provide complete proteins. There are plant sources of calcium, such as spinach.
In short, he can be vegan and be healthy if he knows how to avoid nutritional deficiencies.

no, not yet, if he eats enough from all the food groups. such as nuts count for protein and soy milk for calcium. As long as there are all the food groups, its fine, probably healthier because of the fact its all natural.

everyone dies, so yes in the long run he will die, but he will be fine until then.

He should probably add some sprouted grains to his diet and he should supplement B-12 (because our health standards don't allow the bacteria that provides it to grow on our food the way it does on cow feed, which is where meat-eaters get their B-12). Otherwise, a plant-based diet will actually mean he is more likely to live longer. Studies prove it.

Yeah, he's gonna die, so will you, so will I and so will everybody else.

There's no reason why your brother would die any sooner than anybody else. A vegan diet can be very healthy. Check this web site:

He really ought to consult a doctor or a dietician in order to make sure he gets enough protein. The best source of protein, of course, comes from animals... but he can get protein by eating beans (like kidney beans) and rice together.

If the human body does not get enough protein (what your muscles are made of), then the body will steal the protein FROM the muscles... eventually, even the heart muscle will be at risk. This is why anorexic people and bulimic people often die of their disorders.

Vegan is alright, but you have to know what you're doing so as not to malnourish yourself.
