soy protein, i eat them. They dont use flavorings...and u really wont notice. I used to eat hamburgers but then i became a vegetarian. PLUS flavorings dont count on the diet!! Its fake and not exactly from the cow!
Many years ago, I ordered a meatless, vegetarian-style hamburger in a health food restaurant in Palo Alto, California. It was all right, and entirely edible, but I had the unmistakable impression I was eating breakfast cereal – oatmeal, grains, and granola – instead of anything resembling a real burger.
So when someone suggested I try Boca Burger, another meatless hamburger, I was skeptical.
On the other hand, I was searching for a high-quality, low-fat source of protein. Since I don’t consume meat or poultry, and occasionally grow weary of eating tuna, tofu, and legumes, this seemed like a good idea.
To my surprise and delight, I found Boca Burgers to resemble real burgers in taste, appearance, and texture. This got me curious.
"How do they do it?" I asked myself.
I decided to do a little research. I contacted the people at Boca Burger and discovered some interesting things about this noble, meatless patty they call Boca.
First of all, compared with regular beef hamburgers, Boca Burger has fewer calories, much less fat, more fiber, and almost as much protein. Further, Boca is low in cholesterol to cholesterol free, depending on the exact flavor of Boca Burger selected (Boca is currently available in Vegan Original, Hint of Fresh Garlic, and Chef Max’s Favorite).
"Boca Burgers are a significant source of protein and complex carbohydrates and range from cholesterol free to a low 3 milligrams," said Katie Torres, vice president/marketing, Boca Burger, Inc., Chicago, Illinois USA.
"Depending on the flavor, Boca burgers contain 0 to 2 grams of fat compared to 12 grams in a hamburger, 84 to 110 calories compared to 180 in a hamburger, and 4 to 5 grams of fiber – a hamburger has none."
And the protein in Boca Burgers comes from soy protein.
"It has been acknowledged time and again that adding soy to your diet is one of the healthiest choices a person can make," said Torres.
How do I prepare Boca Burger? I heat it up in a skillet (on low, for about 12 minutes -- six minutes each side) with a small amont of pure virgin olive oil. Boca Burger is pre-baked, so it only has to be well heated. I put a little lettuce and ketchup on it, and place it on a bun, as I would a regular burger.
The result: delicious!
The texture is very much like hamburger, and it "satisfies" the appetite like a regular hamburger.
Unlike a regular burger, however, it is lower in fat, and lower in cholesterol.
There is something else to consider about Boca Burger: safety. Because the main ingredients of Boca Burger are not of bovine (cow) origin, the possibility of contamination with much-feared E. Coli 0157:H7 is practically nil.
You will recall that children have become seriously ill, and some have died, from eating beef hamburgers tainted with E. Coli 0157:H7. One of the most publicized cases occurred in January 1993 in Washington State. Many children who ate contaminated beef patties at a fast-food hamburger chain there had to be hospitalized and required dialysis because of the hemolytic uremic syndrome, a medical complication that can occur when young children or other immuno-vulnerable individuals consume E. coli-contaminated products. In the Washington State case, three infants actually died from complications relating to the foodborne contamination. According to the CDC (Centers For Disease Control and Prevention), an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 cases of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infection occur in the United States each year. Most illness from E. Coli has been associated with eating pink (i.e., undercooked) contaminated ground beef, reports the CDC.
Boca Burgers help one relax about the E. coli threat. Plus, the company has assured The Medical Reporter that it keeps a very close eye on its manufacturing process as well.
"All Boca Burger facilities adhere to general manufacturing practices (GMP) to ensure the highest level possible of quality and safety in its products in accordance with state and federal guidelines," Torres reported. "Boca Burger’s Quality Assurance Department focuses entirely on ensuring that its products are manufactured to meet pre-established company standards and specifications for safety, sanitation and quality."
But the real news about Boca Burger is its taste and texture – and the fact that it is healthier for you than regular hamburgers. I’ve tried some of the other meatless burgers on the market, and I like Boca Burger best.
"Boca Burger has reinvented the hamburger to meet the growing demand of the millions of people who want the best of both worlds – a healthier diet and great

I don't really care for the Boca burgers. I like Gardenburger better. Boca burgers taste like a bad hamburger and I don't eat meat because I don't like the texture, so Boca doesn't work for me. The Gardenburgers I like are made with grains, beans and mushrooms, so I don't feel like I'm eating meat.

They acually aren't that bad, and this is coming from a non-vegetarian. To be honest, they aren't as good as the real thing, but still tasty. And they are made from soy protein, so it's okay to eat them.
