If they're migratory birds, you can ensure that there's adequate habitat at each step of their journey. A migration can be several hundred miles, or many thousands, so can cover all of North America down to Central and even South America.

Same goes for resident populations. Protect habitat. Restore habitat. Sometimes management will have to control one endangered species to help another, such as was the case at Upper Newport Bay with the Peregrine Falcon and the Least Tern. There they also have volunteers assisting staff in removing exotic vegetation that covers an artificial island created to replace their former beach habitat. Other actual beach areas are fenced off during nesting season to keep wild animals and humans away from the nests.

Sometimes agencies will even close trails seasonally to encourage breeding. There are a lot of tools available, and many other areas that benefit all species, such as keeping watersheds free of pollution, and in the case of the California Condor, I think Gov. Swarchenegger recently signed legislation banning lead bullets in Condor habitat, as they feed on carrion, and the lead was killing them.

The main thing that can be done is to protect habitat. Birds need BOTH a breeding ground and a wintering ground..if just one of these is destroyed, the birds will not survive. Important to remove non-native plants from these habitats as well as protecting them. Also, it is important to keep pet/domesticated cats indoors. Cats are really taking a toll on migratory songbirds. Millions are killed by cats each year just in the US alone. Many are in decline due to this problem. See more info here:

Constructing a Habitat is something we can do. I hope to see more of these in the future. I also think with the world getting dirtier we could recycle and just be more clean!

Two ;things:
1. Quit killing them.
2. Give them a home. That means, quit burning their forests, prairies, swamps, building roads and businesses/houses everywhere. Leave some places for the critters.
