No, they're not safe. Work??? Doing what? They're terrible for you. They have a significant amount of fat, sodium, and sugar... that's right, SUGAR. They are low on the glycemic index because, in addition to the sugar, they use sugar alcohols (carbs) which break down slowly in the intestine and become sugar later. They create a lot of gas due to the fact that bacteria are needed to break down those sugar alcohols and there can be resultant pain and often can cause runny stools. They're incredibly overpriced and the few benefits they offer don't come close to overcoming the detriments.... unless you enjoy passing gas a lot.

[EDIT 9:00 pm PST] I just found this while perusing the tudiabetes.com website. A very impassioned and well read subscriber posted a link to this very informative page. It's well worth your time to read. It reinforces what I am saying about prepared diabetic "foods":

There is no substitute for a healthy, primarily vegetable based, diet... trust me... I've tried them all.

Learn to be a label reader!! While this product is formulated for diabetics, and might be safe, there are much better tasting things on the market which are marketed for everyone!!

Glucerna products are way too high in grams of carbohydrate to be even considered. the bars taste like rocks and chew like rocks.

Glucerna was formulated especially for diabetics so they are safe for them. I personally don't care for the taste of the drink but some people like it. You still have to watch the carbs that are in the products. It is not carb free.
