In COPD's centrally actiing medications must be avoided as far as possible, but where will a chronic user of Xanax will go; if he is using 1mg BD or HS is using for last 3 to 5 years, at times we have to institute it or use Blank cartridges.
Using this medicine requires a good experience, just cannot hold on the text book for long.
My Experience:
In Br.asthma due to stress, I followed the text book but none will do, so I gave them Valium 5 mg diluted i/v in 15 minutes, well the patients responded very well. No text book will recommend it.
So practical experience is something that takes times, text books are safety procedures.
Hope answered your question.

Xanax (alprazolam) is one of a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. This class of drugs is generally used in the treatment of anxiety, as sleep aids, as muscle relaxants, and as anticonvulsants. Xanax is used to treat anxiety and panic attacks.

Xanax has no direct effect on breathing. The labeling of the drug, however, has the following warning: "The usual precautions in treating patients with impaired renal, hepatic or pulmonary function should be observed. There have been rare reports of death in patients with severe pulmonary disease shortly after the initiation of treatment with Xanax."

By "the usual precautions," they mean the lowest effective dose should be used and the patient should be watched at first to assure there are no problems.

Since COPD occurs most often in elderly patients, you should be aware that elderly patients do not metabolize the drug as fast, and thus need lower doses.

I hope this helps.

Xanax is a very powerful drug that doctors like to hand out like candy to solve everyone's problems. Unfortunately, they are VERY addictive- only takes 2 or 3 and hard to kick. Be careful and evaluate your situation.. do you really need the meds to control the problem? As well, yes, they do make you very drowsy-there are warnings on the bottle and I am not sure if it will subside because I have never taken them for more than a day or two at a time and always at night to sleep but I would assume that your body will get used to the dosage and want more... that's the other problem you will want more AND, as soon as you try to get off of them.. your body does a withdrawal with the symptoms mocking a panic attack i.e. enabling you to take more medication to satisfy the need. Be careful with this one!
