I am very sorry to hear that news. But it is definitely something you can live with.
If you are only 12, I would make sure the doctor did a C peptide test on your blood. C peptide is a byproduct of insulin production. If you have a decent C peptide level, then that means you are still making a normal amount of insulin and your doctor was correct. I am sure your doctor did this test, but there is no harm in you double checking because type 1 has a whole different treatment plan than type 2. At 12, you would be more likely to have type 1 than type 2, so I would encourage you to make sure you have been diagnosed correctly.
Beyond that, it doesn't really matter which kind you have. You need to do all the research you can. Watch the labels on the back of foods you buy. Stick to your medication plan religiously. You will probably need to visit a doctor every few months, so your doctor will be able to assess when your plan should be adjusted. But sticking to that plan and keeping your glucose in target range is the difference between the inconvenience of diabetes and the detrimental cost like having a foot amputated or going blind. If you take good care of yourself, then you should be able to live a long and happy life.
As far as low goes, low blood sugar is mainly an issue if you take insulin. If you are type 2, there is a good chance you can avoid going on insulin, though it may be beneficial. I think some of the oral medications can also cause low blood sugar. Anyway, low blood sugar usually makes me feel dizzy and lightheaded. I am also very confused when it starts getting very low. And low blood sugar does not always hit you the same. Sometimes I feel perfectly fine and my blood sugar is under sixty. Other times I feel drunk and disoriented when it's right around seventy. It is better to avoid low because you can get hurt or really embarrass yourself. Also, when you drink some juice or soda or take some glucose to raise it, it always gives me a horrible headache when the sugar I have taken goes to work.

1. Find a diabetes support group, preferably aimed a juveniles with the type of diabetes that you have.
2. Find a certified diabetic educator and do some sessions.
3. Find a nutritionist/dietician and do some sessions.
4. See your doctor and get a treatment plan going.
Diabetes is a disease that you have a great deal of control over. As an adolescent, it is going to be challenging. You are in control!

This is the only body you are going to have so treat it well. Eat very healthy, don't eat junk food, white flour, white pasta, don't drink soda. These all spike your blood sugar. Learn as much as you can about diabetes and the complications that are going to happen to you 20-25 years down the road. The internet is truly wonderful for information, use it.

Are you sure you are not type 1? You should see Endocrinologist ASAP and begin taking care of your health. By the time you feel LOW, you don't feel anything any more.
Hey, you might not like my answer but it is true. In August my husband (type 1) hit is ultimate low. He did not wake up one morning, his bloodsugar was 34 by the time. I was at work and called to paramedics who went to my home to give him a booster. He had no memory what had happened this morning. One more time, if you hit LOW, you most likely won't feel anything.
Oh yes, did I mention that 17 and below will give a brain damage?

Your head gets kinda cloudy, tough to concentrate
You can feel like you are going to fall out.
You can get shaky.
Its a pain in the butt to be diabetic, but it is what it is.
You have to live with it and take care of yourself.
Your parents are probably very worried about you and will be hovering over you, let them until you get a grip on it.
Good Luck

my mom was diabetic. do some research, follow not only your doctors advice but follow your diet. eat in moderation and spread 3 meals into 6 smaller meals. when mom's blood sugar was low she would get spacey but when it was high she was physically sick. my boyfriend was the about the same.

Low blood glucose can make you feel shaky & sweaty.
You need to eat something right away, if you get it.
Carry some glucose pills or candy with you at all times.
Gradually, you'll get your insulin shots balanced.
