I'm cuban so I was just going to do fried plantains, yuca, and black beans.. but I'm the only cuban one at this party =) not sure if anyone has even eaten these things. Should I make something different or make everyone taste something new?

Oh and any ideas for an alkie punch? =) thanks.

I'm not Cuban, but what you described sounds good.
I think you should stick with the Cuban theme, maybe your guest will learn about great Cuban food.

If you run out of ideas for dishes, you can throw in a pasta salad or a fruit sald. Some form of bread would be good too.

An alkie punch. I'm trying to remember a "jungle juice" recipe I learned in college.

Rum, pineapple juice, frozen can of minute maid punch, a couple liters of sprite and freshly cut pineapple floating around in the punch. There was no firm recipe... just throw things in till you get a good flavor or a potent drink.

Sounds delish!

Other good sides I would suggest are sweet potatoes (just with olive oil and salt and pepper, wrapped in foil, they can roast with the piggy), and fresh fruit to munch on to counter all of that pork. You might also roast a chicken or some good fresh veggies for the anti-pork crowd (for vegetables easy to roast in foil, like those sweet taters, I'd recommend zucchini and squash, or roasted ears of corn).

For an alcoholic punch, I think you can't go wrong with a mojito, since you have a cuban theme going already. Of course, that's just mint, lime and sugar muddled together, then topped with light rum and club soda. It'll be very light and refreshing to go with all that heavy food, plus, you'll pretty much have to make a lot of it at a time (at least a pitcher) to be efficient.

I want to come to this party, sounds tasty!

I'd definetly have some American food too, just in case. How about a warm side and a cold side.. a nice green salad and then something like mac and cheese or a warm potato salad. An apple crisp would be good and seasonal.

How about veggie kabobs, shrimp cocktail, cheese cubes, pasta & peas, big bowl of fresh fruit (pineapple, watermelon, cantalope, strawberry, mandarin oranges, coconut & nuts).

Lime juice, orange juice, pineapple juice, lemonade & rum is a great punch. Equal amounts of rum, pineapple & orange juice, about 1/4 amounts of lime & lemonade. I don't have the exact receipe but this will get you close and man is it yummy.

Have a great time!

Some kind of apple dish would be a must. Homemade apple sauce, fried apples, apple fritters, something along those lines.
