This will depend on the type of problem.

Usually the cause need to be fixed, or isolated and operation of the appliance is suspended and fresh air is pumped in. Or CO is flush out by replacing it with fresh clean air.

In most cases a few days max; if it is a major problem that needs attending to. In other cases just few minutes.

I have a detector in my house it has never gone off. But if it goes off, I and every one else need to get out first go to a neighbour and call the authority, being an engineer and I know all the systems in my house well I would shut the gas off in to house, from outside and while exiting, leave the door open, then I will if possible open any thing that can be opened without entering the house from out side (any other windows and doors).

I estimate that I can get in the house in few hours. I have only 5 sources that can produce CO if they malfunction, hope fully only one of them was on and that can be detected right away. At this point all other can be tasted.

In spite of all this I will get an expert to evaluate the situation and have them give me the permission to enter the my own house.

It takes a little while for carbon monoxide to build up in the blood, so there should be no problem running inside to open windows, and then either leave the building for a half hour or stay near an open window. If you start feeling light headed, nauseous or a headache develops, then you need leave the building an wait a little longer. It might also be a good idea to get a carbon monoxide detector from Walmart or a hardware store in case there are leaks in the future.

Depends how long it was leaking for and how much it soaked into your furniture. Shouldn't be any longer than 2 days though... Unless the source of the leak is still unknown
