It depends where you live..in some area certain trees are illegal to cut down without a special permit..some trees are considered historical monuments (like the oak trees in California) Also across the US, it is illegal to cut trees that have active nests in them. Look up the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

Don't know about where you are but our's are mostly local, limiting the number of large trees that can be cut without a permit. Plans also have to go before the Planning Commission and Environmental Advisory Board for comment. The state and federal bureaucracies don't get involved unless the project is large enough to require an environmental impact statement or wetland delineation.

Conservation can mean both protection against unwarranted cutting down as well as planting new ones in compensation with utmost concern because trees are the only sustainer of all life on earth's nitrogenous atmosphere. They provide not only food but recycle and maintain the small percentage of oxygen (about 20%) also by the process of photo-synthesis taking carbon dioxide emitted as waste product.

Wow - That really depends on your local codes. Some places don't care what you cut down, other places you need to keep a certain percentage of trees, while other localities require you to hire a botanist to cut down dead trees.
