As most solar energy in a house is heat then anything with large thermal mass

eg find some old night-storage radiators and use the "bricks from them as teh back wall (north) of the concervatory or as a solar wall http://www.cat.org.uk, used in Ladakh http://www.tew.org/development/solar.greenhouse.html

or fill oil barrels with water, or old tyres with earth http://www.earthship.org/learn/brighton-earthship.php
or loads of rubble - whatever you have available locally...

use a photovoltaic solar panel to drive a fan to blow air through the storage medium, and operate a heat exchangeer to get waste heat

traditional Moorish heat management used chimneys to create an air flow and draw fresh air in over a humidifying courtyard fountain...

I have worked on solar systems on houses that that are not on an electrical grid. The normal storage system is an array of batteries. A very small system that only uses a few lights at night will only need a few car type batteries. A normal house with refrigerator (not frost free because they have strip heater), 5-10 lights and normal TV use will need 8-12 large batteries that are about the size of a golf cat battery. Note: Can't support air conditioning or heat with this system. The batteries are expensive and seem to have a life of 3-5 years and their efficiency falls off with age.

It is not the easiest thing to do. The best way to deal with surplus energy is to sell it to the power company. You can attach your house to the grid and sell outgoing power to the company, then when you need the power you can buy it back from the company. That way the power is always used in real time. And if you have a good year and have surplus the entire year... then you can make a profit from the power company.

The cheapest means is water. It has a large heat capacity, is easily stored, and can be pumped around to absorb or release heat, depending on circumstances. Masonry and concrete are also used, as they can be part of the structure of the house.
