Think first in categories, and then fill the categories according to what kind of camping you'll be doing:
The categories are:
- shelter
- food and cooking
- clothing
- accessories
If you're car camping, you can bring a lot more stuff than if you'll be backpacking. For example, you might bring these if you can drive to the campground:
- shelter
cabin tent, an awning, tarps to put under the tent,
- food and cooking
2 burner stove, several pots and frying pan, cups, plastic plates, a large cooler, utensils for cooking and eating, coffee pot
- clothing
whatever you'll need for the amount of time you'll be there, plus what you'll need for the weather you expect. You could reasonably pack a change of clothes for each day.
- accessories
here's where you can get crazy. You might bring a TV or radio, a frisbee, fishing gear, a whole boat to go fishing in. You'll need a rope for a clothes line and to dry towels.
If you're backpacking, your options are different. You need to bring only the essentials, and you'll need to be able to carry everything on your back.
- shelter
1-2 person tent, and a tarp to put under it
- food and cooking
freeze-dried food, a 1 burner stove that gets shared with others on the trip. Nothing that needs to be kept cold.
- clothing
minimal clothes - expect to wear everything for several days. One exception - bring plenty of socks! You want to take good care of your feet.
- accessories
Still bring a rope - it's always useful. Bring a small first aid kit, too. After that, it's up to what you want to carry and have room for.
I'd suggest you go with someone who's more experienced at this, and see what they are bringing. Odds are, you don't need to bring a tent for every person, for example.

It really depends on what kind of camping you mean. Will you be in an RV, with running water and electric hookups in a campground? Or will you be in a tent with nothing at all, or a cabin with private facilities or public facilities of any kind? What you will need to bring depends largely on this, but some basics are things like a sleeping bag, flashlight, small first aid kid, bug repellant, non perishable food, etc.

It depends on lots of factors. Where you are going, what time of the year it is, are you going to be hunting, how long do you plan to stay, etc. If it is in winter, naturally you need more warm clothing and bedding. In the Summer you may need bug spray, etc.
Think about all you will need to eat and drink. There are so many little things to remember. Ways to start a fire, can openers, cooking oil, and so many other things that you don't think much about, but will be a big problem if you don't have it when you are miles from home and from the store.
Make a list of every possible think you might need.

toilet paper, tent, sleeping bags, folding chairs, radio w/batteries, flashlights, bug spray, cups, first aid kit, p.plate, utensils, extra change of clothes, firewood, cooler w/food & water....snacks & easy to cook or already cooked pre-packages food...probably not a bad idea to bring a gun either...unless you are camping at a State or National Park....bring one if you are camping in un familiar territory...there could be wild animals & snakes
