I have been vegetarian for 23 years, my wife is Hindu and most of her family have been vegetarian for their entire lives.
1. Why people think it is cool. I don't know. Do they?
2. to be skinnier..? I know a lot of fat vegetarians (not all of them, though).
3. Do you have an experience that youd like to share? I wanted to be vegetarian since I was a little kid but my mother was against it. I finally was able to do it after I moved out on my own.
4. any other info. I wouldn't have it any other way. I don't care if people think it's "cool" or not. It's my way of life and I am not influenced by that kind of stuff.

Seeing as the majority of the population consists of meat eaters I don't think anyone is being a vegetarian to be cool. Some people choose to be a vegetarian to loose weight, others to maintain a healthy weight, and some just to increase their health by lowering their blood pressure, blood sugar levels, or cholesterol. I used to have fainting spells in which the main artery going to my brain would dialate and cut off oxygen to my brain. After becoming a vegetarian the spells stopped and I have not had one in five years. Before I had them about one to two times a month. I also had little energy before. Now I'm at a healthy weight, not fainting, and have plenty of energy and a good attitude. Even my doctor noticed the drastic change. There wasn't anything specific that made me want to become a vegetarian. I just woke up one day and though, "hey, the only meat I ever eat is chicken so why not try cutting that out for week and see how it goes." I never went back and I never will.

SOME people are doing it just to be cool, yes.. After all "All the cool kids are doing it" (Just check out how many celebs are veg)
BUT.. many MANY people are doing it for their health or because they are horrified at the way the meat animalsl are raised and treated.
People think it's cool probably because
#1.. It's good for the environment
#2. It's healthier
#3. all the celebrities are doing it
#4.. It's just.. I dunno.. it's the latest trend!
#5..it's a bit self-denying.
#6..It CAN be easier to control your weight on a vegetarian diet.. but it depends more on what you DO eat than what you DON'T.
I became vegetarian in 1990, BTW.. before it was "Cool" (Well.. especailly in hickville ARkansas where the kids I went to school with didn't know the difference between a vegetarian and a veterinarian. "Want half of my balogana sandwich?" "No, I don't eat meat anymore." "OH.. that's right! I forgot you're a veterinarian now!" Seriously.. this conversation happened more than once.. and they weren't joking!! Yeah.. that's me.. the 11 year old D.V.M.. LOL...)

I lost a ton of weight when I became a vegetarian; actually, I started losing weight after I got over the whole "I-need-protein" thing and stopped using dairy products to replace meat.
I guess some people think it's "cool" to be a vegetarian because it's outside of what's normal. People are fascinated by things that are different. I think it's pretty cool to meet another vegetarian, considering I live in a "fishing village" and a rural area where the "strict vegetarians" are a bunch of kids who eat fish, chicken, and gelatin.
Today in Biology, I was talking about vegetarian cooking with my friend. My friend isn't a vegetarian, but she thinks it's pretty nifty that I know how to cook for myself (By 17 or 18, everyone should know how to cook for themselves :) ) and that I can make weird stuff, like vegan chocolate chip cookies. My teacher overheard us, and I guess she was interested since I've already informed her that I refuse to dissect on moral grounds. We talked about it for a while. I don't think she supports vegetarianism, but she treated me with respect. That's all I ask.

I haven't met a soul that thinks it's cool to be a vegetarian. I get alot of crap...for no reason too....for being one...asking for no meat on my food..or not wanting to eat what someone made....the list goes on and on and on. I have even offended people by simply saying I'm a vegetarian. It sucks.
I only lost maybe five pounds when I became veg.
I only have bad ones...I don't think you want to hear them either...they suck.
Learn to cook. It's a hell of a lot easier to pick and choose what to eat when you know how to cook. Being able to make good healthy food means you have to know how to cook....it just comes with the terrertory. Being able to boil water isn't enough. LOL.
You also need to be confident in your decision..as meat is everywhere...EVERYWHERE...and someone will always be there to say do want to go get a hamburger or the like. You have to know that you made the right decison for whatever your reasons are to be able to stick with it. Unless you don't like the taste..then it's pretty easy...I consider myself lucky though...I could turn down any meat before I became veggie.

Here are some reasons why I do not eat meat, you tell me if I am trying to be "cool"
1. I HAVE ANGINA, thanks to my childhood of eating fats and crap my heart is clogged, I AM ADVISED not to eat anything with saturated fat, trans fat, or cholesterol. You would be suprised how common it is now for children to be having heart attacks. I am not overweight and I exercise almost everyday, only recently (over a year now) have I started to take care with what I eat.
2. I can't kill an animal. My in-laws bought two ducks from a farm or something, I went out to try to "bond" with them, I threw up after they chopped the dead birds neck off and chunks went flying at me , then the other ones got its organs in a bowl, ew Im going to go be sick.
3. I do not want the hormones or anti-biotics from the meat in my body, thankfully they are starting to actually stop this.

I think there is a subculture among young people who think it's cool to be a vegetarian.
You can basically detect these people by asking them why they became vegetarians. If they list health reasons, then they won't be vegetarians for long, in my opinion.
If they ramble about animal rights, these people are much more hardcore.
I became a vegetarian for animal rights reasons. As a guy of my age, it's not exactly the cool thing. None of my other guy friends are vegetarians; just me.
The people who do it for a trend will fade out of it, much like fads themselves.
People who truely understand the issue and want to counter animal cruelty stick to it and make it a new lifestyle and identity.

People become vegetarians for many reasons, it can be a health concern and environmental concern or an ethical concern about the way animals are treated in slaughterhouses. It doesn't really matter why, just do it!

If someone does it to be cool, they most likely cheat when no one is looking. This means that they aren't veg at all.
The only people that I will believe NEVER EVER EVER "cheat" and eat animals are the people that actually give a sh*t about the animals.
