Both sex partners have HSV-2, what precautions or safer sex practices need to be taken when having intercourse or oral sex?

If both partners have herpes simplex virus 2, then there really isn't a whole lot of precautions the couple can take. They can't "reinfect" each other, because they will both always have herpes simplex virus 2. There is no cure. However, it's still a good idea to use condoms just in case either person has another STD (whether they are aware of it or not). And, unless the couple is using another kind of birth control, condoms also help prevent pregnancy!

If they have oral sex though then it's a good idea to use condoms/dental dams. Herpes can be spread from the genital area to the mouth and vice versa through oral sex. So, if one partner gives oral sex to the other, it's possible for the partner who is "giving" to develop cold sores (oral herpes) caused by herpes simplex virus 2.

BOTH cold sores and genital herpes can be caused by either herpes simplex virus 1 or herpes simplex virus 2.

Good luck and take care!

ALWAYS using condoms...even when no outbreak is evident. The virus can be shed at any time and a person with HSV-2 is always infectious.

Daily doses of an anti-viral medication that can reduce the severity and frequency of outbreaks. Valtrex is the most commonly used one.

Even with those precautions, outbreaks can still occur. Even though both partners have it, active outbreaks can be transmitted from one person to the other at any time...even with the use of protection. All sexual contact should be avoided if one partner is experiencing an outbreak.

Edit: Let me rephrase what I said...I know that two people who are already infected cannot transmit the virus to each other...they already have it. However, if one person has an active outbreak and sexual contact occurs without barrier protection, the other partner can also develop an active outbreak.

Why would two people want to do that to each other? The person with the active outbreak needs to wait until it has cleared up to avoid that. One person out of the two having an outbreak at one time is enough.

There is no way to protect from anything.. And as long as you both have HSV-2 You cant give each other anything worse.. The thing you and her have to do is if you break up and go with someone else you will have to tell the next sex partner what you have... (its the law) I do wish you well.... Good luck and God bless. If both of you have HSV-2 then there is no chance of spreading the virus to the other. You need to be careful when performing oral sex though because it can be spread to the upper part of the body.
